9/11 AA 11 Phone Calls Released

Wed Jan 28, 2004 8:48 am

I just heard it on ABC News; it was really horrible to listen to.

This tells me beyond this shadow of a doubt that a hijacker was in the cockpit the whole time.  Pissed

Yah I heard it too. It sort of sounds like all the hijackers must have been in the cockpit. Two or three people stabbed in business class. The pursor, a F/A and a passenger I believe. Also mace or pepper gas sprayed in the front cabin.

It was disturbing hearing that poor F/A on the airphone talking and knowing what was about to happen to her and the rest of the people.

They actually played conversation between the F/A and AA emergency center. Then between the emergency center and the FAA.

We must never forget 9/11 and do everything we can to make sure it never happens again!

9/11 commission hears flight attendant's phone call
Betty Ong: 'I think we are getting hijacked'
From Mike M. Ahlers
CNN Washington Bureau
Tuesday, January 27, 2004 Posted: 7:01 PM EST (0001 GMT)

Betty Ong was a flight attendant aboard American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11, 2001.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The flight attendant's voice was calm and composed, but her telephoned words to the American Airlines operations center the morning of September 11, 2001, were chilling.

"The cockpit's not answering," flight attendant Betty Ong said. "Somebody's stabbed in business class, and, um, I think there's Mace that we can't breathe. I don't know; I think we are getting hijacked."

Ong, 45, was on board American Airlines Flight 11, the Boeing 767 en route from Boston, Massachusetts, to Los Angeles, California, that was flown into the north tower of the World Trade Center.

While family members wept in the audience, four minutes of Ong's 23-minute phone call was played Tuesday during a hearing held by the Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, known as the 9/11 commission.

Nydia Gonzalez, who was on the receiving end of the call, also fought her emotions as she described the call, which came in at about 8:20 that Tuesday morning.

"Several media accounts of what occurred on Flight 11 claim that Betty was 'hysterical with fear,' 'shrieking' and 'gasping for air,' Gonzalez testified. "I am here to tell this commission that those accounts are wrong.

"Betty was calm, professional and in control throughout the call. I honestly believe, after my conversation with Betty, that the 81 passengers and nine crewmembers on Flight 11 had no idea of the fate they were to encounter that day."

After Ong's description of the scene on board, Gonzalez and a second call-taker asked Ong what seat she was in.

Ong identified herself and her seat number, and said, "OK, our number one got stabbed, our purser is stabbed. Nobody knows who stabbed who, and we can't even get up to business class right now because nobody can breathe."

Commission members said Tuesday that the phone call and other evidence indicated the hijackers used Mace or pepper spray to help seize the plane and isolate passengers from the cockpit. Mace was also found in hijacker Mohamed Atta's luggage, which was left at Logan Airport in Boston.

Ong said the flight attendant working in first class was also stabbed.

In response to questions about the cockpit, she said, "We can't even get into the cockpit, we don't know who is up there."

One of the voices in the control center replied, "Well if they were shrewd, they would keep the door closed."

Sorry if this appears morbid, but I did not hear these clips. Is there a link to the calls?

Hard to believe they did this with box cutters, I live in NY and that day was terrible, we lost 2 people at the Country Club I was working at, including a girl who was on the phone with her family while she was trapped above the fire. Some other Clubs lost 40 members that worked in the WTC. I believe every pilot should be armed. I believe the El Al pilots are and from what I hear they have never had a hijacking. These tapes do not need to be heard. These poor people died like dogs, why do you have to hear it happening?

Support Bush and support our troops! They have been giving their lives since March 2003 to make sure this doesn't happen again!!

I was taken with the calmness of the FA and professional handling of the whole situation, had it been myself in the same situation I am not sure I would have handled it so well. If anyone ever says to me that FA's are nothing more than flying waitresses I am sure they will get a piece of my mind, well done AA for how well your FA's performed there duties, right up until the end. Even tho this is the only recording so far released I am sure the other 3 planes and there FA's provided the same level of service to there passengers and for the company they worked for.

RIght on, Boeing nut.

I think the release of these tapes is a great way to remind everyone, as some people seem to have forgotton the events as if they were as unimportant as who won the All Star Game this past year. Here's a good link for an 'in-your-face' wake-up call:

http://members.cox.net/classicweb/Heroes/heroes.htm

This is NOT the link to the 911 call. I've looked for it, can't find it. Hope it pops up here soon.

Also, while on the subject of 9-11, does anyone remember the AA A300 crash after takeoff from JFK en route to Santo Domingo?? Interesting how nobody really talks about it since it happened shortly after 9-11 and 255 people were killed...

I live in a suburb of Boston.

Information that I have heard indicates that my health teacher in High school, the man who taught me CPR and first aid, was the first class passenger they killed first. They killed a very good man, to make a point. So that they could kill a whole lot more people.

The terrorists made a horrible mistake in getting us this angry.

Av8rDAL,

Thank you for that. I bookmarked it. It didn't bring back the shock, but man, it brought back that numbing feeling of the aftermath. It took a while for that lump in my throat to go away.

Thank you.

As a Flight Attendant who knew Betty Ong and most of the crew on AA Flt. 11, It's not unusual for Betty to have been this calm. She IS a sweet, soft-spoken person.

We Will NEVER Forget.

Av8rDal,

That crash was discussed under the JetBlue post today, it has not been forgotten, a member at the club I work at lives in Belle Harbor, fortunately he lives off of 132nd and was not hurt, I actually was able to see the smoke that morning though I was a few miles away. There is something about that trail of smoke that sets it apart from a structure fire. You seem to know right away that a plane has gone down, those people are not forgotten..

It was a bit haunting to hear that brave woman speaking so calmly about a situation that must've been so very terrifying.

Here is the audio. The first one is an F/A (Betty Ong) to a woman in Reservations. (The latter was at the 9/11 hearing this week, and broke down in tears during the testimony). The second one is the woman in Reservations talking to someone at AA Emergency.

Haunting, chilling, painful...it's all there.

part of it can be heard at http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/video_index/video_index.html

Once there, it's the item listed in "In the News", second row... first column, titled "A Chilling Recording" It opens in Real Player

I'm not sure if that clip is the whole thing others heard on the news tonight since I wasn't watching the news.

That is extremely chilling to hear.

Obviously the flight attendants were doing their jobs, evacuating First Class and keeping calm, even after 2 of their own had been stabbed. All we can do is be proud of how they did their jobs under these extreme circumstances.

Chilling... My eyes are actually tearing up a little. I'm, too, very proud of Betty Ong. Even when she faced death, she was calm. Rest in peace, to the innocent crew and passengers. And I hope their families are finding peace within themselves.

Wow, I will never forget 9/11. My heart and my prayers all go out to the passengers and the families and friends of all the passengers/pilots/firefighters/police officers/flight attendants/emergency crew/ and all those that were lost in the WTC. I have no idea what I would do If I were on one of the aircraft that crashed into the WTC. I cant even begin to image what it must have been like for all those people aboard while the aircraft was being hijacked. That must feel like the most heart dropping and scariest thing to ever face.

I dont think I'm over 9/11. I still have nightmares and stuff and even though I act the same, the thigns that og on inside my head are very different. I'm still so affected.

I think I'll seek professional help. Theres free counselors in NYC for those still having a tough time dealing with 9/11. If anyone else is interested, contact me, I'll get you the info too.

I listened intently for the rest fo the afternoon, even customers came in and just stood listening to the radio, one guy ran out cause his wife was flying to new york.

Let us never forget 9/11

More than 2 years ago, but still the sheer horror and all emotions I had the second I heard and saw about it become so vivid, when listening and seeing footage of 9/11. Simply the worst day of history, period.

I just hope anything like this will never happen again. All of those innocent people....it's hard to put my emotions into words. I ask myself on a daily basis WHY things like this have to happen. People aren't proving a point by killing others.

I was a freshman in High School when this took place and I'll always remember sitting there in Honors Biology period 2 discussing intestinal bacteria and another biology teacher came running into our classroom telling us to turn on the monitor and watch CNN, a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. We watched the news for about 20 minutes and at that time an announcement came over on the PA system for all teachers to stop teaching immediately because there is an e-mail of grave importance in the mail system and they are to read it immediately. They shut down the Satellite television system in the school so that we couldn't see what was happening. At lunch that day one of my friends came over to me and said that the towers had collapsed. They let all of our elementary schools out early, and there were parents coming to the Junior High School (where I was) taking their children out of school. I don't remember what exactly I was thinking but I just knew that this was BAD. REALLY BAD. It was not until I got home that day that I turned on the news and found out what was going on and things really started to settle in.

This has been part of the impetus (besides my family who are all (or have been) officers in our armed forces) to join the United States Navy after I go to university. I feel that it's part of my duty as an able-bodied American to serve my country and it's people and to ensure that nothing like this will happen again.

God Bless those brave souls on all four Boeing's that horrible day.

I really have a hard time listening to those tapes, or watching the video from that day. I sometimes wish that audio from 09/11, of calls and such, would remain private.

One has to wonder, and I hope we NEVER find out, or hear, some of the more graphic audio from inside those buildings as the attacks occured. I'll bet that there were folks leaving voice mail, or on the phone and looked out their windows to see what was coming at them.

But I agree with many of the previous posters, may we never forget what happend, and become so casual about it, that it happens again.

I've wondered the same thing...people leaving messages on the home answering machines, on loved ones' voice mail accounts, and so on. It's awful to hear that stuff, but it's what helps me to remember. We all have our own feelings and experiences from that day.

Helps you remember? You do not need to hear anything, no answering machine messages, no voice mail. God, I know a man who spoke to his daughter who was above the fire after the second plane hit, we don't ask him what she said, we respect his privacy, my God for you to say that listening to a voice mail of someone who is facing certain death helps you to remember then you need help. Leave these poor souls alone, let them rest. These people were murdered, they are not heroes, they are poor people that were killed in cold blood and had no chance. That's it! Give them and their families a break, please..

Sorry to say they are not heroes, I know they are your co-workers, and did their jobs with pride and conducted themsleves like professionals while dealing with a tragedy, I applaud this. The word "Hero" is thrown around too loosely in this day in age. I don't have to leave anything alone, I am not the one wanting to listen to these morbid tapes and re-live this every day, I remember what happened, I was there, I live in NY, I saw relatives who had no idea where their loved ones were, I knew people tht worked for Cantor-Fitzgerald, they, much like your co-workers are never forgotten. I am just sick of this media crap, and people wanting to listen to these tapes. It's wrong.

I didn't know what was going on during the time of September 11.

I went on camp with school from September 11 - 14.

I'm in Australia so the time differences are, mark my words - different!

I awoke on Wednesday morning (9/11?) by my dad telling me that a plane crashed in New York.
At first, I thought he had a bad dream, but that all changed when I put the T.V on.

That morning I had to leave for camp, not for 3 days did I know the cause of September 11, or what had happened to Ansett.

Indeed this was a very bad time for the aviation industy, and may the victims rest in peice.

Yes, I see your point now! The audio tapes should have never been published... If anything only in word format! None the less, it is like the wound of 9-11 is tore wide open all over again!

Maybe it needs to be torn open again. Some jackasses out there refer to 9/11 as a passing fad if you will.

They need to watch this link posted by Av8rDAL:

Oh, regarding Bush getting 500+ of our people and many others killed... all I'm gonna say is, type miserable failure under google.

To me, the most important revelation from these tape excerpts, and one I don't recall ever being said before, was the statment of the use of mace or similar chemicals. One of the news reports connected with the play of excerpts of these tapes, noted that one of these perverts that day had luggage they didn't check in that had traces of these chemicals. Maybe chemicals deterrents were not used on all of the hijacked flights of that day, especially the one that crashed in PA. Even before 9-11, there were strict rules preventing the bringing on any airplane mace or similar products. Of course, they could have put such a chemical product in a consumer product or beverage container. While there were rules to check knives and other sharp objects, they were inconsistantly enforced. About 2 weeks before 9-11, I went EWR-BOS-EWR on CO, and security was more worried about my cell phone than about the box cutter and sissors, and other office supplies I had in my carry on (I was on my way to work on documents in a warehouse outside of Boston)
As to calm of the tone in the phone message we shouldn't be surprised. Let's face it, until that day no other hijacking in the US, and only a few in the world had ever been a situation to make a plane a suicide bomb. Since 9-11, we have seen even small incidents of bad beheavor or jokes about bombs or maybe in the opinion of a tiny few believing that a flight has a few too many people who look like they were from Islamic countries, lead to intense reactions by other passangers and crew fearful of another act of terror by aircraft.
Let us all pray for the victims, rescuers and families of them and hope we never have another such day.

I am a paramedic firefighter and I will never forget that day. I was off to a doctors appt that morning and when I went in to it, no problem. I came out all hell had broken loose! I was off work due to a concussion and I had family traveling that morning (san-ord-pit). She was stuck in san for three days. Very strange and I still get the chills evertime some media type opens some file that should be left alone.

I do not agree with the release of these tapes. Opens the scar tissue, for lack of better terms.

God bless these crew and passengers.

I remember that cold and quiet morning when I awoke about an hour and a half late for school and I ran out thinking that I could still catch the bus when I saw my twin brother and mother just in aww infront of the TV. We had just been there the week before and my mother was freaking out because when we were there she had left us up on the 50something floor to buy tickets to some show but didn't have enough money so when to the bank. She kept saying what if it happened then? I would have lost you all. We keep saying oh bless the passangers and those who charged the cockpit to try to take back the plane but sitting there, crying, made me think what about that very nice and helpful hot dog guy that was in the lobby who after I dropped my food on the ground gave me a new one for free? What about his family? What about the many kids on their way to school who passed buy the world trade center? These people are in my eyes even bigger hero's. They didn't get any reconision (no that the people that did shouldnt) but they just showed up to work like everybody else and what do they get out of it? A 767 on top of them. Listening to the recording above still has me shacking and it's been close to an hour. What if it was my flight from JFK-SFO that day? Why do we have to have a s!#$ attack at our F/A's during our daily flights. Listing to that one F/A makes me respect them and their actions even more. Next time you even think about yelling or pushing that service button think about who's on the other side. So you food wasn't given to you the way you wanted. When your stuck in a pickle who do you look to? Yes those brave men and women who arnt just there to kiss you ass and serve you drinks but to make sure that they're the last one's off the plane at the end of every flight/emergancy. These are the people that keep their calm when 2 of their co-workers are killed. Just something to think about next time "this stupid chick who is telling me to buckle up can take this buckle and shove it up her !#$" comes accross your mind that a@#$ is going to save you. I tip my hat to all F/A and really can't thank you guys enough for your companion, service, and bravery.

RIP 9/11

We had a bit of a scare here too UA777, your story reminded me of it. German students and their German exchange students from my school set out to NYC the morning of the 11th to tour the city, and the WTC was on their list of places to go. Fortunately, the first bus broke down and it took them 40 minutes to get them another one. What's worse though is that they saw this whole thing take place from a freeway in NYC. Thank GOD the first bus broke down because some of my very good friends were on it. It could have very well saved their lives. Kind of a blessing in disguise if you want to look at it that way.

Truly very sad listening to the recordings, the memories of that day and the incredible sadness are brought back to life again.

Here in the UK, we wept with you on that day. It was heartbreaking to see such an even unfolding on live TV. I was off from work that day and I never normally watch TV in the afternoon but I switched it on and all channels had this image of one of the WTC buildings on fire.

At first it was very difficult to understand what was happening but after the second plane hit it all became very clear. We were glued to the TV all day and night, I can remember shedding tears for those poor souls who lost their lives both on the ground and in the air.

I will never forget that day as long as I live, may God bless those 2700 + people who were lost.

They will never be forgotten and justice and freedom will prevail.
