E-Gates At Zurich - Not Yet Snowprove

Wed Jan 28, 2004 10:19 pm

When I arrived yesterday at Zurich from Rome on LX 1737 we were one hour late because of the heavy snowfall. We taxied from r/w 14 to the E-gates (and stopped next to the brand new LX 343 HB-JMG), but then when we wanted to get of the aircraft, we had to wait several minutes and nothing happened. Suddenly the Captain apologized that they could not bring the "jetty" to the aircraft because of the snow, it was too slippery, the wheels were spinning. Fortunatly we were on a Avro ARJ 100 with built in stairs. We went down then stairs and walked through the snow to the building. Not all passengers found it funny but I liked it.
By the way it took me less then 10 minutes from the E-gates to the baggage claim (inkl customs), this is much better than from the outer A-gates.

I was on late shift in Airport Ops Control last night and remember well this case. It's important to mention that it was nonstop snowing for approx. 36 hours and the amount of snow covering the ramp was exceptional. Today, it's normal operations at ZRH...

I have to agree what ZRH said, it doesn't take very long from Terminal E to the Baggage Claim area and it IS convenient.

Regarding the snow problem, I'm sure it's not only ZRH (or Terminal E).

Yes Unique, you are right it was really heavy snowing. I only wanted to tell this quite funny story. There were no problems for the passengers and I could joke with a friendly ramp agent that it is nice to walk through snow because we usually don't have much down here  Smile/happy/getting dizzy.
BTW I am sorry that my post is here twice. I got an server error and posted it again but it seams it was already posted.

I flew from E19 a week ago on LX and it was quite a hike from passport control and very confusing; left, right, up and down, probably took about 20-30 mins get there. Then I went to the use the bathroom and it's a one floor up!! Very confusing terminal and it's very strange since it's new, that they built it like they did. With these designs one would think it was designed a few decades ago.

The777Man: Please consider that the new Airside Center still is under construction. This is causing the longer ways to Dock E. But I'm confident that the situation is getting much better when the Airside Center between Docks A and B will be open by the end of 2004.

@ ZRH,

funny indeed - I watched the scene with the jetway too, as I afterwards boarded exactly that aircraft HB-IYZ on my (delayed) way to FRA.
Later-on at the gate in FRA the cpt told me about the issue they had. Also I had the feeling that de-icing in ZRH took quite long.

@777Man: as already somebody told, this long way to the e-gates is only till beginning of September 2004. From then (I think Sept 4th) the airside center will be opened and then you have access to the skyrail right after passing customs and won't have to walk a long way anymore. I my opinion the E-dock is built very nicely with much light and a very good view onto the apron and the aircrafts. What I hate most at new terminals, when you don't see the aircrafts and this is definitely not the case at the E-building at Zurich.

ZRH: Yes, things will improve with the new airside center opens in Sep04. Still doesn't help with the toilets located one floor up.....Nice with the big windows which seems to be a norm these days (DEN, KIX, HKG, KUL etc).

Really like the observation deck where you can spot from inside the cafe! Very nice and probably best in Europe!
