The plane is a Boeing 747-200B which undergone SUD upgrade when UTA is still using long ago.

Why did Air France write BOEING 747-300 on the fuselage when it is actually a -200B/SUD. I know after the SUD upgrade, it is very similar to 743 but still it is a 742. Can anyone drop some hints?

Thanks.

Maybe because only airlne geeks would care about such baloney? Big grin

Why confuse the the 99,9% normal people...for them, even a "Beoing 747" would be more information than they could grasp.

I think you're right: these planes are the 742-SUD inherited from UTA.
nevertheless, I read in an aviation book that the real 743 is nothing but a 742-SUD except it was made directly with the stretched upper deck and not modified afterwards.
since AF was using the real 742 and 742-SUD at the same time, they probably wanted to clearly state the difference
otherwise you'd have written on both planes 747-200 and 747-200 except the 2nd one had a stretched upper deck and the 1st a classic look  Nuts

It was a common practice. Many airlines converted 200s to 300s (KLM just retired theirs) and then called them 300s. On that note, American calls all their MD-80s, MD-80s when in fact they are 82s, 83s,etc.... You get the point. Why confuse the traveling public on small technicalities.

I think KLM always called them 742s, never 743.
It confused me at first until someone explained the SUD concept to me.

Because of this tragedy, I personally don't think I could ever fly AF again.

 Big thumbs up

Cheers!
