Those who are willing to give up their liberty in the name of security, deserve neither liberty nor security.
A famous man said that. Benjamin Franklin. Maybe you've heard of him.
Now, I disagree with that quote only a little, in that some sacrifices DO
have to be made for security. BUT, there is a line that you cross, a line that divides what is necessary from what is ridiculous and wasteful. We have crossed that line.
Pseudo-security? Is that what you want? Just the mere illusion of security? Or how about an administration that implements security procedures that are efficient and that WORK without disrupting or prying into our daily lives as it does on this level. One that doesn't continually pursue fruitless searches in all the wrong places.
And you want to just let it continue. "Oh better this than nothing at all.". True, but dont you want more than that? Are you satisfied with letting the government restrict you and watch you more and more as long as you feel safe? This reminds me of Poindexter's plan to watch every movement of every american for their entire life, during the Reagan administration. That effort was abandoned, thank god, but here we are again. The excuse for that move was for security, and so is this. Now you tell me, just how far are you willing to go?
Your phone lines are already monitored at random. The sites you visit online are already being watched. The patriot act allows them to spy on you without probable cause and without judicial oversight. They can arrest you and hold you for no reason, there is no due process. This is happening already. And the only reason you dont care about it is because it hasnt happened to you or anyone you know...yet...and because Bush thumps his chest and talks about us defeating the evildoers and that makes you feel good
So, how far are you willing to let it go? We have satellites that can see through buildings and see individuals inside. Are you comfortable with the thought that in the not-too-distant future, its quite possible that they can see you every time you take a dump or take a shower? The technology is there, and they can use it. Do you feel comfortable? Or is that what you want, every aspect of every person's life being watched so that they can't so much as mumble a disagreement with the government without being labeled a terrorist threat.
Bush has already, PUBLICLY, stated that some newspapers who disagreed with his position on Iraq were being un-american. Un-american, for excercising their 1st amendment rights. Gee, that's a good thing to be hearing from the commander in chief.
But hey, it makes you feel safe, it makes you feel good. Until, of course, you're the one getting a cavity search at the airport, or having a background check done as you go to the photo developing place to get back pictures you took on your vacation. You know, anyone could be a terrorist...and you going on vacation, why you just might have been documenting areas to strike next. Can't be too careful!
All in the name of feeling safe. And you want to elect this admin to another 4 years. God help us all. Call me paranoid. Can you say any of this is far-fetched when it is ALREADY happening?
