Airline With Best Meal Service?

Thu Jan 29, 2004 3:08 am

In your opinion, what airline provides the most consistent, unsurpassed in-flight meal service? And on the flipside, those carriers who shouldn't even bother with the effort and cost.

Best food: First Air (okay, I'm a little biased since I work for them, but nonetheless 7F's food is fantastic.)

Worst food: I really don't know since I rarely ever get a meal on any other airline anymore. AC is hit and miss though.

My award for the best inflight food has to go to Thai Airways! I have flown some of the best airlines of the world, and Thai wins hand down.

The worst food I have ever had inflight has to be that aboard Gulf Air...its was horrible, and totally inedible!

CX and JAL will get my vote for being the consistent performers...

NW is really awful...although they are getting a bit, just a bit better

The best meal service has to be MEA (Middle East Airlines) of Lebanon! They hand out a menu to all of the passengers, A MENU!!!, and you have a choice of many different types of drinks and entrees. In case your wondering im not talking about first class. This service is for economy class. Now can you imagine what they are doing in first class??? There is always a wonderful smell in the cabin as they prepare the food.

For those of you who know what kinafeh is (a breakfast type pastry), MEA serves the best in the skies, no doubt about it. It even beats out most restaurants in Europe and the Middle East. Its absolutely amazing, and they wont release their secret.

I totally agree that Thai Airways has the best food! I flew them between Sydney and Auckland in August, and even for a 3 hour flight, the food was outstanding!

I would have to give credit to Alitalia and United as well though. Their food is good too.

Despite the fact that it is served by abrupt unnfriendly staff who throw the meal at you. I would have to say UAL. LON-ORD-LON; nice big meal, nasty crews. ORD-LAS-ORD; lovely crew, nice food; basic, served in a lunch box; no frils, no fuss just good tasty food!! And extras on request!

Qantas also hands out the menu in Y as well! Qantas/Dragonair also offer ice cream (Dragonair's ice cream is Haagen-Dazs) or ice block (Qantas' ice block is chocolate covered with the vanilla ice cream) after the meals.

Are they getting better? Last time I flew them consisted of a lactating flight attendant who went down the aisle and burped "open up!" and sprayed dinner into the faces of the passengers.

In all reality, domestic US coach meals are non-existant for the most part.. it's hard to critique what doesn't exist. Internationally, It's hard to beat the asian carriers.. To pinpoint the "best" is pointless.. meals vary from flight-to-flight and ground catering at different airports across the globe.

It's not like Airlines have kitchens where they have chefs with tall paper hats sauteeing scallions and lobster tails below the terminals of the aiport in which they have service to.

Gategourmet, Skychefs, and a small handful of others provide the meals for countless carriers... not the airline.

This topic should be "Ground Catering Company with the best meal service".

First Air serves caribou? I understand they have some pretty exotic meals, befitting a northern-Canada based airline.

Sometimes it doesn´t depend on the airline but on the catering services at a given airport.

I have tried the same menu at the same airline but from different airports...the quality can be completely different from one place to another.

First Air serves Caribou, Arctir Char, Muskox. First Air also serves beef, chicken, pork, pasta, etc... On every flight, there is a choice of: A northern speciality or a more standard "southern" dish (i.e. Chicken Cordon Bleu, Beef Tournedos).

My vote goes to Air france basically because I had a big duck a l'orange dinner. After 12 hrs and several time zones no ones body knows where it is so they gave out a meal that was all fruit. It was hard to tell if it was a breakfast or a dinner. Now that is clever! It was big and delicious.

The worst meals I find are on BA franchise partner routes. Complete muck that belongs to a toilet.

and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

Within the United States, I'd have to say American or United, for complimentary meals. I still have MENUS from International services of United from 1999 in economy class... there were 3 choices! And they made it sound tasty, too!!! It was tasty and now not nearly as much, but they do still have hot towels, and on flights from Europe, ice cream (that was new after 9/11, I couldn't believe it) All this in COACH!!!
