Much as I love our nation's flag carrier, I do feel that the marketing gurus, planners and so forth in the back office still play the most conventional strategic game and are far too risk averse.

It's quite transparent that the only reason they're recommencing flights back to Fiji is the impending PacificBlue and Flight Centre low frills services to the group. They're just trying to guzzump them - and if true to form they'll pull Freedom flights if they manage to kill the low frills competition.

This is a similar stategy that QF employs from time-to-time with NZ.

The unfortunate thing is that rumours are circulating that another coup is in the offing in Fiji, to do with a dispute between the government and the chief of the military (Gen. Bainarama I believe his name is, but I may have that spelling wrong, sorry). ABC's 7:30 Report last night carried an item about the situation, including an interview with PM Mahendra Chaudry. It added as a post script that since the interview was filmed, the situation causing the dispute has improved, hoever things are by no means out of the woods...

Let's hope for the sake of Fiji that these rumours of a 3rd coup remain just that...

The great thing for tourists is that post-coup(s), packages are of a fire-sale nature. The effects of them (coup d'état) are seldom felt beyond Nandi and the relevant military barracks (in regards to the largest foreign exchange earner - tourism).
