A beautiful a/c with a beautiful c/s. . .as was the case with Thai's DC-10s. Which leads me to my question; Is Thai planning on flying the MD-11 for a number of years (like Finnair), or are they in the process of phasing them out? I haven't heard anything lately, hopefully one of you has.
Recently heard Thai will gradually phase out their A300-600s as A330s keep joining the fleet but nothing about the MD-11. A couple of years back heard that Thai will retire the MD-11s from the fleet in a plan to reduce the numerous types in their fleet but that didn't materealize. So hopefully we will be seeing the graceful bird for some more years to come. The MD-11 indeed looks really great in Thai colours.
If im not mistaken TG operates 2 747-300's. They are still very young. I think they are one of the last 743 produced. So it might stay in the fleet for a couple of years. I believe they where delivered back in 91.
TG have ordered 8 A340-500/600. There are no outstanding orders for A330, so I think the 300-600 will be around for a while, except possibly the earlier non R units with odd ball engines (but that is THAI). I believe the 340's will replace the MD11's reducing number of types (families).
They seem to need aircraft though, TG = Tomorrow Go!
I have heard some old TG's aircrafts will turn into cargo aircrafts and some may go to the LCC which TG will introduce this year. However, since the deal of 7 United's 744s collapsed, I think TG is busy considering how the fleet would be before the new aircrafts arrive.
I actually flew on a TG 743 on August 3 from SYD to AKL. For only a three hour flight (although it is a continuation of the BKK-SYD run), it was a fantastic flight! That's the first time in a long time that I've had a full meal served on a three hour flight, and the aircraft seemed to be in very good shape. TG does great work in maintaining their older planes.
TG's B743s HS-TGD/Suchada and HS-TGE/Chutamat, both joined the fleet in DEC87. HS-TGD gave me my first experience of the upper deck CPH-BKK JUN 1988. Along with AI's two B743s these I think are the only B743s to be powered by CF6-80C2B1 engines.
I wish them many more years of safe service in TG and beyond.
