Yes, you can do it in the open. What you can't do with tobacco, or anything else, is smoke it.

Just ask the F/A for an empty paper or styrofoam cup with a couple of napkins and chew away. There is no law against it.

DeltaMD-88:

You're very welcome and I'm sorry they were rude.

A couple of Piedmont's good ol' boys chewed tobacco and I learned how to set up those cups -- first cup of coffee that went to the cockpit, one of those empty cups with a couple of napkins went, too.

Doesn't matter if the flight is 10 minutes or 10 hours, there's no law against chewing tobacco or dipping snuff on a commercial airliner in the United States.

He was asking about chewing tobacco and snuff. Perhaps those are not common products in Australia?

Had it just been the nicotine gum, he would not have asked.

I sat next to a guy who was dipping/chewing from DFW-DAY. 1.5 hrs, obviously he needed it. I couldn't smell it, and he did it in a non-see-through cup so I did not care.

Chewing tobacco, as far as snuff or "dip" goes, I think is limited to the US. I have never seen it in Europe or S. America. My father-in-law is a B-777 driver and he chews, especially on those long hauls to NRT or HKG. He usually has to take a supply with him, because you can't find it out there either. I chew as well, and usually do on longer flights. I have learned though, use a styrofoam cup or pop can to spit in (as Piedmont mentioned), as other people do not want to see the juice. Also, if I put one in (a chaw) I usually go to the lavatory to put it in, as the smell of some snuff can be overwhelming to pax when you open your can. Plus it is pretty gross to watch someone put a chew in their mouth.

Sweden is the country where the biggest percentage (men..) of the population chews. It is a tradition older than the US itself and we have a bunch of different brands. It's quite common in Norway also, and a little less common in Finland and Denmark. There's no law about it that prevents people from chewing over here either, since it doesn't bother anyone else.

Delta MD-88, I mis spoke he is 777 pilot for CO. You are right no one can smell it once its in your mouth, but open a can of Mint skoal (my preference) or worst a can of Kodiak or cherry skoal. It makes some want to gag.

I've dipped Copenhagen for way too long (35 yrs to be specific, but who is counting).

To the best of my knowledge no law expressly forbids the use of smokeless tobacco products on a commercial airliner.

Certain companies' policies prohibit it, however. Delta generally announces it as part of their pre-flight briefing. It's also in their in-flight magazine dos and don'ts.

As far as being discrete and not wanting to disturb other passengers, a coffee cup lined with a napkin works well, as does a beer or soda can.

Not that I needed a reason to avoid DL, but that is just one more strike against them as far as I am concerned.

I'd hate to be your seat mate if you had a cup just sitting out there to spit in (yuck!).

Also, just because there isn't a law against it doesn't mean the airline will let you do it. Airlines are allowed to set their own rules beyond the FAA rules.

Okay, so what about the poor souls who don't chew but smoke? The reason I ask is because I smoke (tried chew once and couldn't stand it). Anyway, I'm flying to CDG from MIA in March and don't know how I'm going to deal with it. I mean domestic flights are fine... up to 4 or 5 hours, I can handle it. Also the flight to CDG is a red-eye, so I'll try to sleep through most of it, but as many of you know, flying from CDG to MIA is a longer time in the air AND the flight leave CDG at 8:30AM... any recommendations? And please don't say "stop smoking," I wish it were only that easy.

I would suggest using either Nicorette or some other nicotine gum, or maybe use a patch. Flight attendants who smoke often use a patch going across the pond. I understand it works pretty well.

Also.....you might want to take a bag of hard candy with you. It will give your mouth something to do.  Smile

Wish I had some better ideas.

As someone mentioned earlier, it is strictly prohibited on Delta. My dad gave one of his buddy passes to this guy who was caught doing it (in first class, mind you). My dad could have gotten into serious trouble for that.

I thank you for your advice. I'll definitely try at least the nicotine gum. I actually tried the patch to stop smoking and it was just my luck, aparently I'm allergic to something in it. I had a horrible reaction (not only on my skin but also nausiated).

I should probably "test" a few options out before I'm at 30,000 ft. and climbing up the walls!

Speaking from experience with my dad. He chews all the time. It isn't so much the chewing tobaco as it is the spit that smells. Over the years his spit cups have been knocked over and they just stink. Sometimes he will leave one in my truck and it makes the whole truck stink. The smell is nasty.

Pmanchuk:

With the gum, you don't actually chew it the way you would regular chewing gum. You just kind of put it between your cheek and your gum and suck on it. I understand it doesn't taste all that good, but it would be better than getting on your own nerves.

Now that I am thinking about it, there are some little nicotine things (sorry, I can't remember what they're called or a brand) that look like little white plastic cigarette holders. You simply pretend to "smoke" them. When you inhale, you get a bit of nicotine. I had forgotten about those things until just now. Perhaps you could try those, too.

Man, all this talk about having a chew..had to go throw one in.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

DeltaMD-88, funny you brought up this question as I've wondered about it myself. I've often done it on flights, but as you mentioned, try to do it discreetly. As far as cups go, when on a flt I often use a Starbucks coffee cup. It's got a nice lid with the little hole on top perfect for the occassion.

True, once it's in your mouth, no one else can really smell it. But open the can and it's no secret! Skoal Berryblend is almost like having Skittles in your mouth. I was skeptical about it at first, but now it's all I chew, or mint if it's not available. Now they have Vanilla Blend. Kind of wondering what's going on at R&D over at Skoal. Tried it once and didn't really care for it.

Skyway1, how true...Cherry Skoal is pretty bad!

I know what you're talking about... I've seen commercials for them. Although I'd be afraid to try to use those in the air, especially since I'm flying Air France and I don't speak a word of French... so I'd hate to do something that might raise eyebrows so to speak and not be able to clearly explain myself.

ahhhh, a new typical sailor that dips or chew or whatever. Personally, I don't think it's really a problem unless if you started to spit on the floor. But if you ask a f/a for a cup, im sure they won't have a problem...just make sure you use a knapkin to absorb your dip.

What rating are you seeking, shipmate? or yet, too early to call you that?

You could buy some and take them with you along with your Nicorette and hard candy.

I am thinking that one or more of the flight attendants will speak English well enough so that you can explain to her what it is and why you have it. I am guessing that she will have seen those before.

Good luck with your nicotine and your flight!

Sorry to be a killjoy but I had to make a public service announcement. Chewing tobacco (like chewing betel-nut leaves) can and does lead to mouth and throat cancer. I've seen many patients have laryngeal and esophageal cancers secondary to chewing tobacco. This means that they have cancer in the back of their throat and in the tube that leads from the mouth to their stomach. Eventually, the patients who survive chemotherapy and/or radiation treatment need to have a way to swallow their own secretions. The way doctors fix this is to take out parts of the mouth invaded with cancer (including sometimes the tongue) and the entire esophagus. Then, they pull the stomach up through the chest and sew it into the back of the mouth. This is the only way (in some well selected patients) that we can restore function.

Pmanchuck - the patch probably gave you a local skin reaction which is not uncommon. The nausea that you experienced was because your body go too much nicotine at one time. Sometimes, some patients have to cut the patches so that they do not get "nicotine toxic." Patients like yourself who may be sensitive to nicotine doses may benefit from other medications (such as Zyban/Wellbyutrin) to help curb nicotine cravings.

Again...sorry for the public service announcement...just something that I felt I had to share.

Since I'm trying to quit chewing does using the patch work or is that mainly for people who smoke? I've tried Wellbutrin and it did nothing for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

COIAH99 - Congratulations on wanting to stop! In an effort to keep aviation topics as such, I started another thread in the non-aviation section that addresses your question:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/non_aviation/read.main/492957/

Yes, the nicotine patch, inhaler, gum, or any other product out there should help curb the cravings of both smokeful(??) and smokeless tobacco. Studies have shown that working with your doctor will improve your chances more than just trying to do it on your own. Most doctors are thrilled to help their patients stop tobacco as our literature shows, it's the #1 thing that we can do to improve the health of our patients.

Good luck to everybody out there who wants to stop smoking and/or smokeless tobacco.

This may just be me and my suburban upbringing, but chewin' backy is really disgusting in my humble opinion. I mean it's your prerogative and you'll never find me doing it, but from a health standpoint as well as being courteous to those around you...Both my uncle and my cousin do Skoal and it makes your stomach churn when you catch sight of that nasty ass spittle soda bottle that they lug around with them (well, my uncle did lug it around with him until he died unfortunately a couple of years ago--but my cousin does it). Just as long as you keep it out of sight I guess it doesn't make any difference to me. It's a very ruralized thing.
