Which LH747F Nearly Crashlanded?

Thu Jan 20, 2000 3:44 am

Somewhere sometime ago on the web I´ve seen pictures of a severely damaged Lufthansa 747-200 Freighter after crashlanding in the early 80s (Kaitak/Hkg if I remember it right).
So far I could not find any information which registration it carried.
On the pictures that plane looked far more damaged than Qantas 747-438 in Bangkok last year, it even looked like a writeoff with similar damage as Koreans 747-400, which was crashlanded beyond economical repair in Summer 98 and officially written off a year later. Anyway that LH plane was repaired, thats for sure (think it was brandnew then).

dabyu 83 10-18 The aircraft in question was D-ABYU a Lufthansa 747-200F. The crash occured on October 18, 1983 at Kai Tak. You are correct in stating that the airframe was fixed and returned to service. I believe that it is still in service with them!!!

Thanks, CX747

Thats very interesting for me!
Indeed its still flying for LH - and its actually the only 747 Freighter I´ve ever been on! LH lend us that plane for a TV commercial shoot in `97 - and D-ABYU looked like a nearly new plane to me inside and out.
