8 Trips/week Between Tokyo And Alaska This Summer

Sat Jan 31, 2004 10:47 pm

That is what Alaska Vactions is planning for the tourist season, and they claim they are already 60% booked.

The non-stop flights will be operated by a North American 757, which is a downgrade in size from the Omni DC-10 that was chartered last year.

The direct flights cut the normal transit time by about half since passengers will not have to go through a hub such as Seattle of Frisco.

So if you are planning an alaskan vacation from asia this summer, you may be able to cut 5 or 6 hours off your flight time to get here  Big thumbs up

Wasn't Northwest at one point serving Anchorage from Tokyo with several flights a week? If so, does anyone know when they discontinued service, as I'm almost positive that they are not currently flying that route today.

Don't know about NW, but BOAC had scheduled flights LHRANCTYO in the early 70s - The Polar Route. That was discontinued when Russia allowed overflying rights to foreign carriers.

L-188,

I presume all flights to ANC? Or by chance is that eighth trip per week going to FAI?

Far-fetched as it may seem, Japanese tourism reps have been visiting FAI regularly over the past few years, and a few charter flights have been rumored. Nothing has materialized as yet though.

757s sound like the right capacity A/C for NRT-Alaska; a tough job to fill widebodies in this developing (& seasonal) market. I hope it works out!

No need to go through Seattle or Frisco when they can go through Seoul.

In my understanding and experience with tourism (I worked in the best museum in the state for 3 years) in Fairbanks, Japanese tour groups come here in winter to see the northern lights. That's been the saving grace of tourism in Fairbanks, unlike most elsewhere in AK where tourism is almost strictly in summer. I haven't seen too many visitors from Asia come here in the summer season though. The largest group of non-Americans or Canadians in summer are from Germany thanks to the over the pole flight with Condor (or is it Thomas Cook now?), although groups from Australia are growing in number (imagine that flight!!). But then again, I can only speak for Fairbanks, I don't know too much about what goes on in the rest of the state.
