Akron/Canton, Best Low Fare Airport?

Sun Feb 01, 2004 7:47 am

From personal experiences, I think that Akron/Canton international is the best low fare airport. it is also very small so it is easy to move around in. Yours?

Kansas City. It's one of the least expensive cities for airfare in the USA. Lots of service from Southwest, Airtran and Frontier, so that the majors really have no choice but to match it.

What about DAL? 97% of traffic is Southwest.

I think BWI easily. Major hub for Southwest and a growing operation for Airtran.

Deltaffindfw:

My 2 cents: DAL is cheap, but not the cheapest. You just described a monopoly, and while it may be all SWA, that's not exactly ideal for the lowest rockbottom fares.

Ideally you have a good mix of LCCs with some majors, just as the other posts have mentioned w/MCI, BWI, and CAK.

No one said price was the factor.  Big grin

I was kidding about DAL.

Actually, I have two trips to MSY planned for the first weekend in April and for Jazzfest in May, and both DL and AA (from DFW) are at least $50 cheaper than WN.

Can't forget about MDW. Southwest and ATA have a major presence here.

CAK is okay in my opinion. It is the only airport in the US that I know of that permits smoking right inside the terminal that's not in a designated area. The place was pretty run down and the restaurant selection wasn't the greatest. BUT, it was worth it to save $200 over flying out of CLE. That's just my opinion though.

You'll never guess who I'm voting for...(check my username)! Of course, I'm slighty biased being employed by the airport itself!!!

Maybe not ideal, but not bad when the monopolist is Southwest. Example, fully refundable one-way fare from DAL-HOU (240 miles) is $92. Fully refundable one way fare on Delta from ATL-BNA(241 miles) - $412.

CMH is pretty decent, with sufficient service from the majors (including a good selection of flights on WN) . No one carrier dominates the airport, and many routes have multiple carriers with service, so there is plenty of competition.

Some of the lower fares right now:

BWI-$83
Chicago: $83
DC-$103 (weekender fares)
PHX-$159
SJU-$254

PHF Newport News/Williamsburg, Virginia. Car to Plane in under 30 minutes, and lots of AirTran flights to ATL, MCO, and LGA. And some competition from Delta Connection on the ATL route keeps the fares cheap. Also US/Piedmont Dash 8's to Charlotte. And just a 20-minute drive from ORF Norfolk Int'l, which has Southwest service. Having FL and WN in the same market, even at separate airports, helps keep the fares down around here. Contrast with Richmond, which has six legacy carriers and no LCC service, and flying AA from RIC-DFW can run around $800 (last time I checked). Maybe JetBlue can come to Richmond and then Southeastern Virginia will have the triple crown of (east-coast) LCC's, and they won't be directly competing with each other.

ORD747CLE, when did you fly out of CAK? That place is fantastic. They have remodeled it with keeping a touch of the history behind the airport. You can not smoke inside the airport outside designated places, and they are about to expand it with a new pier with 4 new jetways. There is a nice Wright Brothers tribute on the road coming in now as well. They have 2 new business center room for computer use in peace and quite! I think that Fred Krum has done a heck of a job with CAK. I was there 3 weeks ago and am more impressed every time. My favorite little airport to fly into and a good place, but wouldn't call it the best low cost airport.

I've flew out of CAK several times the past year. It's a great little airport for both cost and convenience. They are expanding at such a rate though, I wonder how long it will last. As it is parking can be a problem--but that's everywhere.

Aztec...actually part of the master plan being done is a parking garage. I thin the website is www.akroncantonairport.com and you can see the master plan.

Port Columbus- Is the America West hub at CMH as large as the ones in LAS or PHX?

America West no longer has a hub at CMH.

CMH for America West is no more, they still serve the airport but no longer as a hub. It never was anywhere near LAS, much less PHX. It more or less served as an RJ hub in recent years, before that sort of a gathering point for east coast cities to PHX, LAS and points in between.

Regarding CAK, what is that new "Aviation Park" like? Anyone been there?
Thanks.

I have flown out of CAK twice and it is a nice airport, but calling it the best low fare airport is a bit extreme. AirTran is the only low cost carrier and only flies to ATL, MCO and LGA. I have never seen significant savings on the majors' fares when compared to CMH and CLE.

Based on the airline service (not facilities), I'd say Kansas City. It's centrally located and Southwest, Frontier, and AirTran have a strong presence there. Not only does it offer a lot of discount airline service, it's pretty well served by the majors. It has flights to most of the major airline hubs and usually offers convienient scheduling. In other words, I haven't used MCI just because it's cheap, I've also used it due to better scheduling. I've flown out to Nashville on Southwest as well as on Northwest to Detroit on my way to Osaka. Discount airline freaks and road warriors on the majors alike can find good options that suit them wherever they're going.

Thomacf, FL isn't the only carrier to offer low fares at CAK. However, FL does drive the fares at the airport. Until CO pulled out, it was frequently much less expensive to fly CAK-CLE-Florida than it was to fly CLE-Florida. The new food court is an improvement, but there are other small airports that are still better.

ORD747UAL, the only place you can smoke inside the terminal is the smoking room across from AirTran's gate. There's no smoking area in the waiting area or baggage claim. The employee lot was moved recently to the south end of the terminal, which opened up another lot for longterm parking.

FYI, CAK is not designated International, its Akron-Canton Regional, even during the short time AC flew in. Akron Fulton (where the Airdock is) is the designated international airport for the area.

All in all, it's a great airport, good service at decent fares to most of the country now, thanks to the majors matching AirTran.

To all that responded about the smoking section: You can smoke in the restaurant/lounge, right next to the security check point!! I have never seen an airport in the USA that still permits this.
