Mexicana To Acquire 4 More 767-300 By End Of 2004!

Sun Feb 01, 2004 12:10 pm

The March 2004 Airways Magazine is out on sale already. There are a couple of articles about Mexicana. The first and the shortest is the confirmation that Mexicana will acquire 4 ex-SAS 767-300 by the end of this year. The article, which is on the beginning pages, has the picture of the "Buenos Aires" 767.

The second article is rather a trip report of someone who took a RTW (round-the-world) trip using all the Star Alliance members, including Mexicana on one of the North American legs. The article basically explains the advantages of buying RTW tickets and the benefits of choosing affiliated airlines. The MX leg was ORD-MX), Mexico">MEX. I didn't read the entire article because it was very long, just browsed through the paragraphs quickly and carefully read the paragraph relating to MX.

But going back to the subject matter, MX is clearly demonstrating with these four new acquisitions (via lease) that there will be a boom in new international routes as everybody has been talking about in other threads: very likely to Europe.

Great news, but I think that instead of the B767 they will
lease A330's or A340's for their European service as they
are in negotiations right now with Airbus and they will
benefit from having an all Airbus fleet A318's arriving at
years end (10) and A320's and A319's and if they go
Airbus with the widebodies, their pilots will be able to
fly all airplanes. Makes more sense and economics instead
of the B767's.

I was told that they got one only to try and see if it was
economical.

Lets see as Mexicana is really making the most significant
move ever.

I received an e-mail telling me it was 6 more B767's 300.
Its not confirmed yet but I'll let you know.
I think they'll keep with the B767 and not A330's, the reason...... AA

Well, I don't know about an all-Airbus fleet. Remember that MX has got some 757's too.

In a separate thread (sorry I can't provide the link but it was probably a thread dealing with MX's code sharing with AA) there is mention that MX was negotiating the lease of A330's, A340's and B777's. Since the ex-SK 763's are leased, perhaps at the expiration of the lease MX could get a few 772's for its European routes.

Hopefully, MX will use the 767-300 acquisitions to increase capacity on the MX), Mexico">MEX-SFO route. It's almost impossible to get tickets on MX on this route given they only fly the A320.  Sad

And add to that the fact that MX's daily flight is via GDL; if you want to fly non-stop, the flight is only Saturday and Sunday from SFO to MX), Mexico">MEX and Friday and Saturday from MX), Mexico">MEX to SFO.
