My mother works in a travel agency and she can attest to how things aren't as good as people think. There are some great deals out there for IATAN (changed from IATA) but they can be few and far between. Being a travel agent in today's industry is hard work with little reward (pay is low and benefits are dissapearing).
Most airlines dont offer any good discounts to travel agents. The exception is Mesaba Airlines which allows agents to fly non-rev. Otherwise, travel agents get travel industry discounts at hotels (although not much, if any, discount from regular rates). The exception to this one is Marriott Hotels, which offers travel agents great deals (rooms as low as $49/night), if the agent participates in their Famtastic program.
