It was my dad was that was "detained" as UAL put it. Granted the president was coming two days later and the Marine One chopper was already in town. However, the best the Police Sergeant could come up with was a traffic violation for "Disobeying an officer".
Anyway, I haven't been down there spotting on public roads in a long while. Probably not since last summer. I have been "inside the fence" a few times with a friend at the Airport Fire Station so there's obvisouly no hassles there. However, the PHL
Spotters Yahoo group founder is a regular on Hog Island Road and he reports that as you long as you park on the side of the road opposite the fence, the police generally won't bother you. Last summer we were there for about 4 hours before one cop made us leave, but we had the tailgate to our truck open and our scanners / cameras were in clear sight. He did leave two other cars not 50 feet away alone. I would suggest remaining in your car most of the time to not draw any unwanted attention.
Also, things you can look forward to are about half a dozen US A333s, some US 762s, BA 744, AF A332, LH A332 or A343, and a whole crap load of US A32Xs and RJs. Throw in a few AA S80s, DL 80s and 752s and a bunch of NW Deisel 9s for good measure.
Hey UAL, Brian (DeltaMD11) wants to organize another spotting meeting in March again, hopefully with better results this time. Let me know if you want to join us. We haven't decided on a date or anything yet.
