Another UA 744 Returns To Service

Mon Feb 02, 2004 9:41 pm

N187UA is the latest 744 of United Airlines reintroduced into service these days. That makes 10 that are left at VCV now.

That's great news, any 747 that returns to sky is always welcome.

Hopefully the rest of them will leave Victorville soon.

How do you get 10? That's not what uni says.

If 1 left the desert then there a 8 left.

How long have they been retired. Why don't they try to lease them. I also never understood why they have already retired 777's???
Couldn't they pass them on to other airlines?

I wish UA would start to use the 744 on the HNL-West Coast routes again. I miss those days. I am sure they could fill it. At one time, they were flying a 747 (forgot what series) from SFO to KOA. Three classes of service to Kona and I heard it was always full. One flight a day to LAX and one to SFO from HNL wouldn't kill them. They don't even use 744's to NRT and KIX out of HNL anymore. They are 3-class T7's.

I dunno if the market is their from the West coast like it used to be, I know DL has cut alot flts from LA to their. I dont know if UA could fill a 744 these days(maybe certain days and time of the year) to HNL from LA or SF, we had a hard time filling the the L10's alot of times from LA to HNL. We have since downgraded to the 75's which hold much less than the L10's or a 744.

Speaking of Hawaii. Wouldn't using a 744 on the ORD-HNL route solve the pilot's crew rest issue since the 744's have a crew rest area? Maybe someone from UA can answer this question.

If UA started ORD-HNL on the 744, that plane would have to go full to the brim with passengers and cargo to pay the high costs of operating! It's not a very high-yeilding route to begin with and then add to that high costs associated to some of the most senior FA's and FO's working that trip, plus usual variable costs like maintenance and irregular ops (weather)... too expensive!

my two cents...

Actually, N187UA is still being overhauled at BFM but it will be great to see her back again..

The HNL thing....VERY low yield...I'm thinking we can use the 744's on higher yield markets...There isn't much business travel to the islands

i'd like to see ual use the 744 on another asia route or an increased frequency to that region. having flown (summer 2002) ual to shanghai and witnessing the extremely high passenger loads, i can't believe there wouldn't be enough demand (though i do understand the limitations of the bilateral agreements). either way, while i love the 744, ual needs to renovate the passenger cabins. fifteen hours in cramped coach with no ptv's, packed to the gills was not what i call pleasurable. great planes though.

UA did not RETIRE some of their T7s. They merely gave them back to the lessor because the lease rates were too high and they wanted to lower their costs. they did an analysis and found it would be better to pull the 744s that they own out of the desert and operate them rather than operate their T7s with high lease rates.

Actually UAL777 United renegotiated their leases on the 747s, and they were then less expensive to operate than the 777s.

I think UAL operated the 747 out of SFO/LAX to HNL and it was 2 class.

they were the 747-100's
nose numbers were 88xx or 89xx
they held 44 first and 408 coach.

If they made a couple 747's 1 class and flew them ORD-HNL? I wonder if they could make a dime?

Ok, Ordpark, I will give to you that HNL et all are leisure markets and not business markets, but we are not to be overlooked. An extremely high percentage of the population of the state of Hawaii are MP members and among those 1k's, P1 and P2 rank up there as well. Remember, and this is a fact, that the Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated group of islands in the world. We have to get on a plane to go anywhere, including enduring high fares for 12 minute flights to OGG and LIH. UA is a very common choice out of HNL simply because of their frequency to the West Coast. If anything, I would at least consider it for a seasonal service like May through Sept.

HNLflyboy - don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a 744 reinstated on the ORD/HNL run but I feel UA can generate more revenue on other routes...I'm not trying to put down Hawaiians or anything - sorry if I offended....

I saw a recent photo of N172UA in storage. Some of those UA 744s are in storage without engines. How on earth are they going to leave VCV without their engines. And why on earth would they remove the engines if they are to be reactivated in service?

Takes about 5mins to refit an engine, well not quite but it's not like the aircraft is engineless and is required next week, if so it takes a few hours to refit them, I actually heard that they were leasing the engines out to other airlines or something.

Great to see the 744's returning to service!

Long live the 747!  Smile

UADC8,
We don't have 9 777's in GYR, I thought it was 5.

Bring me a VIP declaration form when you come into town today.

THANKS
