Do Prefer Travelling Alone Or With Others?

Tue Feb 03, 2004 4:57 pm

I am really on the fence with this one.

On one hand, I love travelling alone because I like to do my own thing at the airport. My partner isn't into airports at all. They drain him! So he wants to get there last minute, and go right onto the plane. Me... well, I don't have to preach to the choir about a fascination with aviation.

So when I am with others, I feel like I am dragging them around. And I at times I feel weighed down.

On the other hand, when I am alone, I am alone. And so much nicer being with a friend or loved one.

What about you all?

Unless I am with my girl I travel solo. It's the only way..You do what you want, when you want, where you want..I drive from NY to Nevada alone and it's the greatest thing in this world..

If I am going someplace I am not familiar with I rather to do it alone (so I can Explore! ) When I'm on vacation, I like to have someone pleasant with me to spend the time with. It is all depending on the situation.

Definitely alone!

How else can you meet interesting local people at 3 am and hang out with cool travelers from all over the world? A good friend at home can quickly turn into a 100 kilo bag of cement on the road (as I just recently found out in Africa when I broke my rule about traveling alone and agreed to let a friend come along...they couldnt make decisions. had no sense of direction. had no traffic sense to save their life and nearly got swiped by a bus in Cairo)

Never again!

Depends if they want the window seat or not! lol I MUST have a window seat when flying or I go insane. No window seat is like going to Disneyland and staying in the car! So I like to travel alone for that reason. However its always good to have someone to share the experience with, and have someone to talk to, especially on long flights. As for in the airport, that's when I definitely want to be alone. My family always wants to go to the little museums, or gift shops and look around from now till eternity. I just quickly buy a key chain for my collection, and find the nearest and best window as fast as I can. I'll sit there watching planes, listening to the tower on my scanner till I have to make my way to my next flight.

My all time favorite person to travel with is my dad! He loves aviation just about as much as I do, and will always use the left ear piece when I listen to ATC. My father has been blind since he was about 25, so he has no use for the window seat, but he is constantly asking me what I can see, and I love describing it all to him. I'll sit there and tell him step-by-step what is going on. ie: "Flaps are going down... I can tell we are getting lower... ooh we have a vortex off the wing!... flaps are even lower... 3...2...1... touchdown." etc... etc... We have way too much flying!

Anyways back to the subject, as long as I'm traveling with my father, its all good. The rest of the family? Preferably not, but the times that's are not as pleasant, just make you enjoy the better ones all that much more.

I don't mind travelling with someone else as long as they do the airport and the flying bit MY way ! I like to check in early (to get good seats, both on assigned seating and freeseating flights) and board early (to get overhead locker space, and glare at people who want to sit in the empty middle seat next to me (on free-seating flights). I also have to have the window seat, it is No.1 Law of the Medes and the Persians and Cannot Be Changed. It is nice to have somebody to travel with, as long as you get on and can agree on what you want to do, or else not mind doing your own thing if you want different things on the odd day.

So far I have only travelled alone on one occasion. And that was a blast! I didn't have to take care of my sister and mom who always are worrying about passports and gates etc. I could just relax and I didn't have to think of anybody else. I could walk around the airport, spot planes, visit stores without anyone getting bored. Although I wouldn't mind having a nice girl with me when I travel. As long as she don't complain on my airport routines. Big grin

But if I go on vacation to a resort I would prefer to have company, family or friends. But I prefer being alone at the airport.

Alone, unless it's with my kids. I love sharing my enthusiasm for aviation with them, and watching them soak it up. I'll never forget their faces on our first take-off. Total joy and wonder.

Trust me, it doesn't take all that much to get hit by a bus in Cairo! The Egyptians drive like maniacs. When crossing a road, the "secret" is to put your hand in the air, towards the oncoming traffic, and run like a bat out of hell!! Usually they stop, however, no guarantees....... Big grin

Since 2000, I have been traveling alone on all my international trips. I'm quite selfish about my "free time" and really don't have the patience to deal with nagging travel partners when I want to explore, relax or sip a drink.

A companion ONLY if he/she has a sense of adventure.

My "loved" ones, I think after having flown with them, once is enough. Them stressed me out 10x more than the TSA, baggies, expensive airport food etc combined.

We hope our loved ones share the same passions we do, but [sight] real life doesn't work like that.

I'm torn. On one hand when I fly with family and friends, I am less concerned about elbowing the person sitting next to me. But when I'm alone, it's easier for me to get the seat that I want and I can do things my way.

I guess I would have to say that I like traveling alone but being in the destination with others.

I like to travel alone. It's easier that way and I like to do my own thing at airports, like watch the planes go in and out.

However, it might be nice to have a really cool partner to travel with.

I've travelled extensively with my ex-girlfriend, and now I definitely miss company to share those experiences that make travel so exciting. Thus I definitely prefer travelling with others.

However, I'd only go on longer trips with people that are like-minded and have the same aims when travelling. No point travelling with someone who wants to see/do completely different things than myself.

I flew to Paris for a weekend with a mate and even though I know him very well this trip wasnt that great - he got tired of walking (I love exploring cities walking through them) so we just ended up drinking in cafes.

I prefer travelling alone as I don't usually have any plans made. Back in my non-rev days, I would quite often just show up at the airport and just hop on a flight to somewhere. I'd do my own thing and not worry about what I was going to do once I got there. I've only travelled as part of a group a few times, and the last time was a non-rev day trip with a coworker. His views on day trips were about like mine, just get there and just go with the flow, with the only scheduling constraints was getting to the airport in time to catch the last flight back to ATL.

I love it when I am traveling with my girlfriend, because:

- She is a nice girl.

- She is also very interested in visiting other countries.

- She speaks beside German and English also French and Spanish (I can only speak German and English).

- She is F/A and also (a little bit) interested in aviation.

I'd love to travel alone but the damn airlines keep filling up the rest of the plane.

One thing I don't like about travelling with others is that when you get a row of three seats empty and there is only two of you , your travelling mate insists on sitting right next to you instead of leaving the middle seat free. That really bugs me. That's unless I really like them!

On long hauls I like to travel alone as if I find an empty row it means I don't have to negotiate who will sleep in it. That's selfish I guess.

I could never go on a holiday charter flight on my own as it would feel weird especially if there's lovey couples, families and everyone having a good time and me just sitting on my own. Too sad!
and with that..cabin crew, seats for landing please.

I do not mind flying alone at all, as I want time to spot, and enjoy the whole airport experience. I flew alone this past summer from JFK-LAS, totally enjoyed it. I would however, not want to travel alone. When I got to Vegas, most of my friends were waiting for me.

I prefer traveling alone. Like others, I like to get there pretty early so I can do my own thing at the airport, do some spotting, chat with a few pilots, have a bite to eat while watching planes taxi! ah....I love the airport  Smile

When I travel with someone usually they think going to the airport is a drag, although my parents and sister seem to respect my love for aviation though by leaving a little early so I can roam the terminal a little bit. I hate traveling with groups though because when I say "I'm going to visit the cockpit after the flight", they all look at me like "Oh no you're not, i'm tired, and am ready to go to the hotel".
