Vietnam Airspace Unsafe?

Wed Feb 04, 2004 5:17 am

According to an article by CNN, U.S. officials want a complete review of Vietnam's airspace system to determine whether or not U.S. based flights would be allowed to arrive at the nation's airports...

Well it was pretty unsafe for US planes up until 1975, but I think its probably OK now!

Seriously, having just made a series of flights within Vietnam with VN, ATC was not something that was particularly worrying to me. Now I know I don't have access as to how Vietnamese ATC works, but given that the Vietnamese are a pretty efficient bunch of peeps, one got the feeling all was as it should be. Further, neither Saigon nor Hanoi where exactly busting with traffic, even during apparent rush hours.

Further, the airspace is populated by Cathay, SIA, Lufthansa, Air France, Thai, EVA and Shanghai Airlines amongst others and one would assume they have done their homework...

...Mind you there were some pretty nifty looking Migs at HAN!

I tell you what, as soon as VN is allowed into the U.S. market as a mainstream airline, I sure would love to go and visit over there. I bet there are some amazing sights from both the war-era and post-war era's!  Big thumbs up

I would imagine that most of the U.S. officials that are doing the investigation are probably Vietnam-era guys who know only of a bad reputation for the country. So, I'm guessing some of it may be unfounded but most is probably just double-checking their air system to make sure.

It is almost a "no news" article, but one suspects its Uncle Sam being a little high and mighty.

Without sounding too anti US, I hope Vietnam continues to preserve its identity for the foresable future and is able to resist US globalisation and grow in its own image.

It would be nice if they could. The nation definitely needs to economic support and would profit very well by including the North American countries.

I believe this is common when US airlines want to fly to a country that no US airline has flown too. I could be wrong.

More than 100 flights a day travel over Central Vietnam on the busy route between BKK and HKG. Having worked with Vietnam Airlines in the past I know their airspace management has been upgraded recently but still could use some improvement, as one experience I had indicate:

...on a domestic flight between SGN and HAN in 1992 we were at altitude in a TU134 when I saw an Aeroflot IL96 was at the same altitude as our plane flying a bit slower than the TU off the right side of the plane, no more than 200 meters away. For five surreal minutes, we glided past, as passengers and crew gasped and pointed at the huge plane. No announcements were made, no adjustment were made to the altitude, we just passed the IL96 like a car in the fast lane on the freeway!
You call it the world, we call it home. Pan Am.

By 'their own image' do you mean the Japanese, French or Chinese one? I love it when Europeans bitch about the US and globalization when they are the ones who enabled it to happen in the first place through colonialism.

Maybe they meant the airspace is unsafe due to the avian flu!!!  Big grin Just kidding!

I'm sure it's safe, having been to SGN and HAN last year and another trip to HAN in March 2004... again on Cathay Pacific from JFK.  Big thumbs up

Paddy,

Whilst colonialism is up there to be criticized, and some of the periods of rule embraced terrible tyranny, the French, Chinese and Japanese influence left beautiful buildings, wide boulevards, cuisine and language which the Vietnamese have embodied to deepen their culture. All the US left was an enormous amount of scrap metal, which I am pleased to report the Vietnamese have put to very good use. Its also nice to be in a country where that gaudy golden M doesn't exist.

For the record in the 20th C, the Vietnamese kicked out the Japs, the French, the US, China and ran out the Khmer Rouge. Pretty good home record if you ask me.

Usnseallt82, the Vietnam needs the US like Southwest need flat bed sleeper seats...They're doing just fine as they are thanks!

Advance apols to the Ed for going slightly off topic

Shankly, maybe my thread was misinterpreted by you, thinking that I was against the nation doing well. I think my main point was that it's a shame that U.S. officials, most of whom are old Vietnam-era people, think that they must launch a full-scale investigation into the country's airspace. I think that this will pass with time and I welcome Vietnam into the world marketplace!

Hopefully this misconception will not go any further.  Big thumbs up
