DL Upgrades For Non-medallions

Wed Feb 04, 2004 7:15 am

What kind of options are there for people with several tens of thousands of skymiles and no medallion status ? Under the old system, it's very possible to be a semi-frequent flyer and end up just under the MQM's needed for Silver ...

I know on Northwest, you can pay a onetime charge of $75 and upgrade to 1st class ... Does DL have a similar option and/or the ability to use skymiles instead?

thanks

If First is fairly empty, then you can buy stand-by upgrades at the gate $75 and up depending on the length of the flight- but only if you have a certain fare code on your ticket (Y,B,M,K,Q - I think) - no web fares!!

Also, anyone can use miles to upgrade to first - subject to availability.

I thought the upgrade to first class was only 50$? That may be only on shorter flights but I was pretty sure that was what it was up till December. But yeah, if you buy the ticket from a non-delta website you wont be able to.
God, forgive me for who I am, and help me be the man I want to be.

Price depends on length of flight. Don't be fooled though. You can buy tickets on delta.com that are not eligible also - aka e-savers.

Depending on mileage the purchase price is $50, $75, or $100. All fares are eligible except for L, U, and T. As well as mileage redeemed coach tickets.
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

DeltaMIA has it best on the 'at-the-gate-for-sale-upgrades'. Starts at $50, goes up based on length.

Not determined to be available within 3 hours before departure, and then I think, only for sale within 90 mins. of departure at the gate only.

The mileage-based upgrades, however, can not be used on the lowest fare classes (T for sure, maybe L and U).

NW's is similar, though the starting price is $35 (a better value I think, I've bought it a # of times).

YBMHQK Fares are eligible for gate upgrades. Non-medallions, with enough skymiles can upgrade on YBM fares at time of booking upon availability. 10,000 miles for domestic, 20,000 to Europe. Or you can travel with a medallion and get upgraded at 12 hours on a K or higher fare. (Domestic only)
Is ignorance something you have to practice or were you blessed that way?

Then GSPSPOT don't buy the lowest fare or any net savers.
If you want to upgrade, it's likely you're going to be paying another $200-300 in fare difference plus day-of-departure upgrade fees at minimum. I hope the mediocre First on the B767-400 for 90 minutes is worth that price.

One important thing to remember about upgrades for non-medallion member is that now medallions have unlimited upgrades. There may not be seats left for the general public.

You might try buying a discounted A class (First class) ticket from Delta.com. This is a great deal to fly up front.

It's the cheapest F class cabin in the sky.
While not being part of their ff program....I have yet to be denied a F-class seat.
In all fairness, we typically have full..or marginally discounted Y seats (which, I'm sure attribute to getting cleared relatively early in the queue).

I think it's a great incentive to use Delta.

My fare class is "Q" going down, and for some reason, "H" coming back. Would there be any problems? (Already purchased).

I'd probably only upgrade on 1 segment....

With H and Q, you are fine, as already paying more than the lowest available fare.
