No Seasonal SAN-OGG On HA This Year?

Wed Feb 04, 2004 8:46 am

Last year, Hawaiian Airlines had a seasonal San Diego-Maui flight. I believe it operated from May until September. This year, it doesn't look like it will return, as there has been no announcement yet. Does anyone know for sure whether the flight will or will not return? I don't remember hearing anything about the flight's financial performance.

Right now, my hunch is that SAN-OGG will not operate this year, because it seems HA will be using all of their 767s to introduce SYD-HNL and the second daily SEA-HNL.

Thanks for any info.

Last year, HA divided the flight during the summer months between OGG-SAN and OGG-SEA (4X a week and 3X a week respectively). I checked SABRE and this year it seams OGG-SEA is scheduled still as a daily flight and SAN is not scheduled at all.

Maybe HA could still split the two before the summer between SEA & SAN or, better yet, if AQ had the equipment, they could do a routing such as SLC-SAN-OGG along with SLC-ONT-HNL (replacing two flights HA dropped and, at the same time, add SLC to their system).

Or LAX-OGG, for that matter! But did that even operate in the first place?

Yes. LAX-OGG was HA5, return was HA6. For a while on certain days it did LAX-OGG-KOA-LAX, KOA was eventually dropped.

Hmmm...no SAN-OGG, SFO-OGG, or even LAX-OGG? Makes me wonder if HA is just waiting to make an announcement on all three routes sometime in the very near future. I would be very surprised if HA suddenly decided to drop all service from OGG to California.

The SAN-OGG operated on alternate days with PDX-OGG. As of this spring, it becomes a daily PDX-OGG with no SAN-OGG service. Why? I don't have a freakin' clue. From what I heard the loads were great out of SAN. (Caution - Personal rant coming here). The marketing department at Hawaiian couldn't sell hot chocolate to an Eskimo, and wouldn't know a good deal if it bit them on the okole. (Hawaiian slang for....um.....use your imagination).

That's why we don't have the SFO-OGG flight anymore - that went away in early 2003. The marketing people said "But do you know how much it costs to advertise in the bay area?" To which the pilot group shouted back "Do you know how much it costs to fly an empty plane back and forth each day because nobody knows we do it!?!?!?!?!" Therefore, the company cancelled the flight. Same goes for the LAX-OGG flight, which we couldn't fill because most people didn't know we flew that route either.

I think I mentioned it in an earlier post, but the SYD service is not a new plane. HA cancelled the ONT-HNL fight as of March 1st, and will use the extra plane on the second SEA-HNL flight until May when the SEA goes back to one plane and the extra one starts the SYD flying.

It's all very frustrating to those of us who are on furlough. We know HA can deliver a great product, and with more planes we could all be back at work. All that's standing in the way is a management (and especially the marketing department) that is TOTALLY clueless.

Enough for today's rant. Sorry. Just had enough of freezing my okole off here in Fairbanks Alaska. I'd rather be back at work flying to Hawaii.

HA's marketing/revenue management people are out of it. I have purchased HNL-PHX roundtrips 3 times for my dad and his co-workers for business trips. All three times the fare was $420 per person roundtrip, and all the flights looked near full or oversold based on seatmaps bought 2 to 4 days BEFORE departre with NO Saturday night stay. UA, DL and AQ were selling tickets for between $800 and $3000 and all included a stop or 2. My Dad would've paid alot mroe than $400 every time....YIKES!

Airlines complain that a lack of business travelers is killing them, but HA doesn't even take advantage of the few they have!!!!!

You are absolutely right. They don't know what they're doing. I think that their idea of "yield management" is a guy in charge of triangular red traffic signs. Just another reason that until we get some REAL airline people in charge, we'll never achieve our fullest potential

Hawaiian has done some impressive advertising in the San Diego area, and apparently it has paid off. I know my observations are nothing if not highly amateur, but every person I've talked to who has taken the SAN-HNL flight (at least a dozen), has said the flight was overbooked.

I can understand canceling ONT-HNL...one could tell early on the flight wasn't doing well, as HA tried to save it by routing it through LAS. But still...I would be immensely surprised if LAX-OGG, SFO-OGG, and SAN-OGG were anything but full and making money.

I remember calling HA sales on several occasions spanning from 1995 (When DL canceled their SAN-HNL flight) to 2000 asking them if they would consider adding SAN to their system and they kept telling me San Diego was within the LAX "catchment" area and there was no need for the service because people could easily drive there. So I am glad they finally came around on that one at least.
