Big, Busy, Boring....

Wed Feb 04, 2004 1:21 pm

This is from the enthusiast point of view.

What airports fit the category of being BIG, BUSY, but BORING in your opinion?

For me its SAN. I dont even like messing around with SAN. Its been like that since I got out here in 1993. I can usually sit at any other airport all day. At SAN, I am bored in 2-3 hours. I would much rather sit at my hometown airport KTVC, (IN THE SUMMER!) and watch the bizjets,DC9's, and RJ's for a full day, or KGRR, or pretty much every other decent size airport in the world.

That is probably the only one for me.

What are yours?

NIKV69,

I have never been to LGA, but, have been to JFK and EWR. I got frustrated at JFK. To me, it wasn't worth paying the tolls, only to sit in a mall parking lot two miles away from the approach to one of the runways to see the exotics. EWR on the other hand, is awesome. I definitely could spend a whole day there.

TEB rules too.. Then again, I love bizjets.  Big grin

I'm sorry that I can't answer your question directly, but it made me think how UN boring Fort Lauderdale Executive was a few weeks ago. In the space of a little over an hour I saw, among the regular GA and corporate aircraft, a Starship land (yes I'm sure), a Learjet 23, a Lockheed Jetstar, Pitts S-2, and on and on. The diversity and some fairly rarer types made it quite the lunch. That, and they have what's called the 'Lounge', which is just basically a raised portion of the lawn on the approach end with picnic benches and 2 speakers transmitting the Tower.

JFK is not enthusiast-friendly at all. Unless you know the airport very well, it isn't worth visiting just to see the airplanes. Its a maze of streets, terminals, hangars, and what not with very limited good views of the airside action.

As for the most boring airport... I'll vote for Phoenix.

Sorry, big, busy and boring does NOT describe SAN in the least bit. I would think maybe SLC, DEN, DFW or ATL. If SAN is boring and views and locations do not count, then there are several "big" airports with less interesting variety and certainly a much more boring approach. Even if SAN was all WN, it would more interesting than some other airports I've been to. I guess if there are no 747s to Europe or Asia, it is boring.

747's have nothing to do with it... I dont know how to explain it. I usually have the urge to go to any airport, especially a busy one when I can. I just do not get that feeling in the least bit at SAN.

DEN can have it's moments of good action (when I was there last week and the BA 777 came in followed immediately by the LH 744), but otherwise it is mostly United and Frontier all day long.

When you get sick of seeing AA Super80s and F100s, a DL MD-88 or CRJ will mix it up for you.

DEN.....LOL you guys obviously havent spent much time at DFW......BIG, BUSY, and BORING is exaclty the words i would use to describe DFW....nothing but Delta Rj's.....and AA MD-80's...I do have to admite though, i must have left the other day at a busy time for heavys cause i did see alot of AA 767's roaming around.

I took AA Flight 66 two days go...its the 777 flight from DFW-ORD....great trip and they showed all the movies they had availiable at the time as well....nice treat.

these airports sound great if you're a fleet collector like me......I'm yet to get to the states, but when I do.... Big grin To be honest as far as diversity goes any of the big hub airports in the states would appear to be 'boring'.

The most boring airport:

Ambrosich Field, Elizabeth, CO. Privately owned, only 1 a/c operates from this two runway (mowed patches of grass in a farm field) airfield. I have never even seen it. Ever. Ever. Ever. I wouldn't recommend spotting there. You won't get much.

I will have to add IAD as boring. Was there last week, and saw UAX CRJ (about 20) UAX J41 (10), NW DC-9 x2,1 757, 2 A320,couple 737s ( all UA). The only exciting part was as I was leaving seeing Saudia 747. Wasn't as busy as I would have expected.

Going to SFO tomorrow, I am sure that will be a treat!  Big grin More UA!!!!!!

Detroit DTW..

NW DC9 after NW DC9 after NW DC9 after NW A320 after NW A319 after NW ARJ after NW CRJ.... argh

Throw in an occasional Spirit MD80.

DTW is an amazing airport.. but I would die spotting there.

MWP DTW are pretty boring. all NW... FLL is nothing special either. ORD is alright if you see terminal 5, or terminal 2... but if youre running through connecting on UA or AA.... youre gonna see either gray or silver the whole time youre there. even though UA's B/C concourses are very very nice i think.

DFW

It gets boring after a while to see AAS80, AAS80, AA757, AAS80, AE SAABS, AAS80. With the occasional foreign carrier. One thing I absolutely hate about the airport is the fact that there are signs for carriers that don't actually serve DFW. There are signs for Qantas at the B Terminal, I know about the codeshare with AA, but the signs aren't needed.

DFW is fairly miserable.
ATL, a little more variety and all those different Delta liveries give a little relief, or at least an illusion of variety.

any Ryanair hub, especially Charleroi, not really that busy but dull, dull traffic.

LHR !!!

I used to work in TBC, with a great view of the southerly runway - endless, ENDLESS streams of BA 757's and 737s (in those days), becoming slowly endless ENDLESS streams of BA A319/A320 - ho bloody hum ! I used to take my breaks and make a rule that I would stay outside until a non-BA widebody landed - used to guarantee me at least a 20 minute break...

Well I didnt ever think I would be saying this, but since AA has been the new boys in town in STL that airport has gone from a zoo (back in TWA days) to a ghost town. I have been there a couple times recently. One of the time I saw a total of four (yes 4) MD-80 aircraft. The rest were some ERJ's, and a couple southwest 737's. I hope to see that airport come back alive sometime like it used to be.

Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky...seems like endless Comair CRJs with the occasional ACA Fairchild-Dornier 328JET and a Delta MD-88 here and there. On the bright side, it's a great airport to connect (at least in Terminal 3)

I have been to SFO so many times i could navigate through it with my eyes closed!! Afterthe second time around the terminals it gets so boring. It doesnt even seem all that big to me. Also, are there any good spots for viewing aircraft outside the airport property? I have heard of a park but i dont know where it is.

CLT is definatly on that list. When plane spotting there, all you get to see are 737s, Dash 8s, A319s and a 757 once in a while. And of course all US Airways.... no variety at all. The only nice plane to see there is the A330 of course.

I agree with Coronado990, there are excellent locations around SAN to spot, and it has beautiful scenery. As far as the original post, a boring airport in my opinion would have to be ATL....all of thos DL planes would get old after a while if you ask me, but I do still love going through ATL.

I have to agree with SAN, we pulled up in our car to do some spotting (after driving past the perfect spot) we were there for 2 1/2 hours and we became more interested in the naval ships that were in the waters behind us ( and IM not into naval ships) also in that 2 1/2 hours we walked along the path by the waterway behind us, The only rarity that I saw was a British Airways plane, other than that is was all the same planes!

It is true, San Diego is the biggest city with the busiest airport not to have intercontinental service which makes it less interesting but the approach is still unique and planes are upclose and personal and makes up for it.

The difference with SAN is that once it gets back on track being a real international airport again...as it was before 9/11 sidetracked progress...there will be nothing like.

I know JFK is not user friendly when it comes to spotting or pics but I still love it, maybe it's because my dad worked there and took there when I was young, but I just love the place. LGA may be nice to watch planes come and go but the whole place just is not appealing to me..Newark is good for spotting but also is an ugly airport to me..

Yes, TransWorld, yes....Sad and heartbreaking isn't it? A huge airport now small. Any airport that is busy is okay for me, unless it is only one aircraft type. Also, the fewer airlines there are at an airport, the more boring. In other words, big, busy airports with inconsistent types in the traffic (constant aircraft types, few airlines ) are my definention of big, busy, and boring. In other words, STL.

DFW and SAN get my vote for most boring airports. I was born & raised in Dallas, so D/FW is very special to me...but spotting there absolutely sucks. It is the same AA MD-80's over and over again. I remember when I was growing up, that airport was awesome. There were so many different airlines and plane types. But now it is dull, dull, dull.

SAN gets my vote for best airport if we are talking about scenery, but there is hardly any variety to the aircraft types. It is completely overrun with Southwest 737's and American Eagle RJ's. You can't beat the approach to SAN or the airport's location right on the bay, but it would be amazing to get a bigger variety of airlines and aircraft.

But having said this, no airport is completely boring to me. I could be entertained watching AA MD-80's all day...it is just that variety is nice.
