So How Full Have Your Flights Been Lately?

Thu Feb 05, 2004 12:01 am

I always like hearing how full flights are. I know that a full flight doesn't guarantee a profit but its still an interesting tidbit of info.

I just did Waco-IAH-MEM-STL on a Monday, leaving Waco at 6:50am. Back on Tuesday, leaving STL at 5:40pm, STL-IAH-Waco.

Waco-IAH ---10 people (Skywest)
IAH-MEM ---about 35 (COEX E145)
MEM-STL ---nearly full (Mesaba RJ-85)

STL-IAH ---40 (CO 737-500)
IAH-Waco ---7 (Skywest)

I did Virgin SFO - LHR on Jan 31 and it was pretty much full in all 3 classes.

I also did Emirates SYD - DXB - LGW on Jan 10 and the SYD - DXB was full in econ and bizz and 75% full in first. DUB - LGW was all but 1 full in bizz; I would have done DXB - LHR but it was totally full, so I had to take the LGW flight.

My last leg, MAD-LPL (U2 733), was probably 85-90% full. Can't be exact, of course, but around that mark.

I recently did a MSP-MEM day roundtrip. The morning MSP-MEM flight was about 90 percent full on an A320 -- the return on a DC-9-30 had five of us in first class and just six in the back!

Two months ago I flew American from JFK to CDG, flight AA 044, the flight was full full FULL. The load factor was 100%, there was not a single seat empty. That was just after the New York City area had its tremendous snow storm for three days. I can undestand that my flight was so full because some passengers had to be rescheduled after their flights were canceled. I was suprised that there was no overbooking announcement at the gate.
It was a nice flight anyway, we left with not much delay and made it to CDG the next morning safely.
That was my last flight ever. I haven't flown since then.

Passenger count last weekend:
Jan. 30
US Airways EVV-PIT CRJ-200 - 10
US Airways PIT-CAK DO 328 - 30

Feb. 1

US Airways CAK-PIT EMB-145 - 21
US Airways PIT-EVV DO 328 - 5

The light loads on Feb. 1 are probably due to the Super Bowl which was in progress at the time.

Last May, I flew AA on ORD-SEA. The outbound flight was full. The return was oversold, and when the gate agent couldn't get enough volunteers, the supervisor made the decision that all MIA-bound passengers were going to take the AS non-stop, which got into MIA about 30 minutes after the AA flight out of ORD.

In October, the AA Fokker flying out of ORD to ATL was about 90% full and 100% full coming back.

Over the last two months:

MKE-LAX, Midwest Airlines, full both ways.
MKE-LAX, Northwest Airlines, full one-way, nearly full on the return.
MKE-DCA, Midwest Airlines, 75% full (guess), both ways.
MKE-DCA, Northwest Airlines, nearly empty, perhaps 15 passengers one way, only a few more on the return.

I don't actually keep track of all the routings and flights i take but I will say that practically every flight I have taken in the last 3 months on AA, UA, AC, WS, DL, B6 and US have been oversold (even when the travel agent said the flights are available) only on my Air Tahiti Nui flights in January were the flights only half full.
All the airlines seem to be doing well if loads and airport activity are any indication..of course US carriers are right now are practically giving seats away so no wonder they are all in the sh@#$#$!
cheers!

And they say the airline industry is in trouble!! I'm really enjoying reading how so many of the flights that you have all been a passenger on have been full or nearly full.
Go airline industry!  Big thumbs up

Just flew UKs biggest carrier to PHL

OB LHR-PHL F2 J30 W16 Y60
IB PHL-LHR F6 J48 W10 Y76

Not busy at all and other flights to and from PHL had same sort of loads. Glad no flights were combined or cancelled as passengers enjoyed the space. Summertime will be a different story when all flights will be FULL!!!!

Full flights do not necessarily mean that the airlines are performing well. You have to take yields into account, not to mention all the schedule cuts which have taken place.

I havent flown since December ( yup, starting to get that need to smell jet fuel again!) and Ive got two months off before a fairly busy March but:

VS LAX-LHR bout 90% fulll
VS LHR-LAX absolutely utterly HEAVING and stuffed to the seams

HP RNO-PHX eh 60%
HP PHX-LAX 60%
HP LAX-LAS 50% (shocker that!)
HP LAX-RNO there were 8 of us on that flight on an A320 I believe.

Granted, the last two were quite late at night on the last departure for HP to RNO, that second flight is NEVER full.

WN RNO-LAS 100% sold out
WN LAS-RNO 80%

So we shall see what RNO-JFK via SLC will be like, not to mention JFK-LHR on good old VS  Smile

It certainly varies by market this time of year, but generally Jan, Feb are very light traffic months until school vacations, spring breaks etc start to kick in. UA Pacific traffic has been very heavy, domestic, especially midweek, is light. there are always exceptions, however...loads begin to pick up dramatically in mei-Feb.

I flew on NW412 (DC9-30) on 26 Dec 2003 DFW-MSP. 28 in coach and 2 in FC. It was funny because everyone in coach was assigned to rows 15 to 20 and that's where they stayed. I was the only one to move....to 5A. I should have taken a picture.

Of all 6 transatlantic flights I was on in the past 3 years, 5 were full in economy, maybe with the odd free seat here and there, and the 6th one was full on the way to Europe and half full on the way back.

Also the 3 or 4 domestic flights I was on were pretty much full.

Being non-revs we like full planes (airline makes money) but not too full so we can get on, peferably mot a middle seat, but that happens way too often.

28Dec:
BOS-EWR 100% (middle seat)
EWR-TPA 100% (middle seat)

2Jan:
TPA-EWR 100% (Isle seat)
EWR-BOS 60Y,6F (first class)

4Jan
BOS-EWR 100% (middle seat)
EWR-SFO Bumped
EWR-SFO Bumped
EWR-SFO Bumped
EWR-SFO 1 empty seat (isle seat)

9Jan
SFO-EWR redeye 60% (isle with nobody in the middle)

10Jan
EWR-PWM 50% (Emergency exit on the 2-seat side all to myself!!!)
