Bomb Joke Girl Walks Free

Thu Feb 05, 2004 1:06 am

I think she was very very lucky to get off so lightly. I hope this is a warning to others not to make such stupid remarks at an airport.

'Bomb joke' student walks free
A British student who was arrested at an American airport after joking she had a bomb in her bags, has walked free from court.
Samantha Marson, 21, was spared a custodial sentence after agreeing to give about £650 to the families of the victims of the September 11 attacks.

She was charged with making a false bomb report, and could have faced as much as 15 years in prison.

Miss Marson, originally from Bridgnorth, Shropshire, spent four nights in jail in Miami after making the joke during a baggage check at Miami International Airport.

She was about to board a British Airways flight to London on 17 January when she told an official: "Hey be careful, I have three bombs in here."

Asked to repeat herself, she repeated the same statement twice and was arrested and charged.

After being bailed from Miami Dade County Jail four days later, she said she was "really very sorry".

"This is a warning for everybody who wants to play stupid jokes not to do that. I wasn't thinking, that was my problem," she said.

Good for her! Her arrest and holding might be a sufficient deterrent to would-be 'jokers', but time will tell. Let's hope for their sake and anyone inconvenienced as a result that it is successful. However, I have my reservations.

Well, it seems reasonable. The four nights in a Miami jail can not have been much fun. Most of all she was guilty of being very foolish.

However, I think airlines and their passengers might be justified in feeling that they should be able to file civil suits against her (or, more likely, future offenders) for losses due to terminals being shut down and departures delayed. There is precedent for this in shipping. If the delays they cause run out very long the losses could be staggering to an individual forced to compensate. And why should they not be?

The terrorist attacks that hit the WTC on 09/11/01 are completely irrelevant to the bad sense of humor of Miss Marson. However, it's good to hear that judges over there aren't gone insane completely and that she got away with a rather light (if you can call it light) ,punishment compared to the 15 years that were on offer.

I would immagine that a better deterrent would be to have her spend 4 nights in a Brazilian jail. Besides being tasteless, it is rather costly to follow up on such a claim; it strains resources (as the sh*t really hits the fan), and takes up loads of time, and not to mention the paperwork involved! All for some childs amusement.
She got off too light!

I find it interesting that a white girl who is GUILTY of this crime gets to walk away free after 4 days in detention while there are brown folks INNOCENT of any crime who sat in Guantanamo for over 2 years.

I think she deserved to be held for the time she was held - I'm sure that's taught her a lesson. However, I think paying money to the families of 9/11 victims is completely inappropriate and a very strange penalty for a justice system to impose.

Race or skin color has nothing to do with this particular situation. There are issues that need to be addressed as we all know. But race and Skincolor are irellevant to this case.

We can put out there a few possabilities. Maybee this young woman wanted to stay in the states a bit longer. Personally I feel very strongly that ANYONE making such JOKES/THREATS should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Heavy fines and Deportation and possably denial of entry into the US in the future would be appropriate. No need to waste american tax dollars in keeping her in an american jail. This woman violated not only the law but basic rules of common sence.

Again just my opinion. and everyone else is entitled to thier own.

I think she shouldnt be joking about it in the first place, or not to officials at least. But I also think that the fact that they didnt go through her bags and find that she didnt have a bomb, and then release her more easily is stupid. I mean, it is insensitive, but this country wastes way too much time and money on unimportant and stupid things like this. Shouldnt they go after the real threats that arent going to be this blatant? Honestly, would a person who had a bomb in his / her bag TELL anyone!? I dont think so. Anyhow, she did her time, and that was more than enough for her stupidity.
