Unmarked Swa Jet At Bwi

Thu Feb 05, 2004 7:05 am

While spotting at BWI on Monday 2/2/04 I saw a silver SWA Plane land about 1715utc. It landed just after UAL252. I wish I had film in my camera to get a shot of it. The body was silver and just the tail was painted in the livery. Looked neat, much better than the current livery. I realise this plane must be brand new but dont you think they would paint the whole aircraft prior to delivery at Boeing. Any input or ideas as to what was going on here. The stripes were painted on the body, the only thing

That aircraft is probably the silver (25th) anniversary plane for WN. It's meant to be that way, and has been for some time.

Actually, silver one used to be bare metal, but they found that the downtime it required to buff the plane was too much, so it was repainted "silver".

My dad saw that plane at MSY a couple weeks ago, he emailed me a pic of it, but it dissappeared  Sad. I thought it was temporary but you guys cleared it up for me. Thanx!

I was at FLL on 1-13 and watched it taxi by the NW/CO/JetBlue terminal. It was impressive to see.

The buff time for the Aircraft Appearance Technicians to do this (this was their responsibility, not the A&P's) took too long and the costs to pay for the buffing system plus overtime was too costly so they decided to just paint it silver, that saved even more money because now all it needs is wax after every check.
