US LCC Response To Westjet?

Thu Feb 05, 2004 1:46 pm

Westjet finally ended months of speculation today by announcing scheduled passenger service to the US (5 cities). I've been following the rumours and talk in the forum about a US LCC (Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest, AirTran) starting scheduled service to Canada, do you think that one of them will announce something shortly?

As Canada is a more limited market, WJ has already reached the point where it needs to expand to the US to keep the growth rate up; the day they start YUL-YYZ is the day they've accomplished all they can in Canada in terms of maximizing their revenue.

However, for US LCCs, there is still a ton more potential revenue to siphon off of crumbling legacy carriers (eg - WN/USAirways @ PHL) and other expansion domestically. The resources used in expanding to Canada, and its associated costs, would be better spent domestically.
