PVR-SJD -- Who To Fly?

Fri Feb 06, 2004 5:35 am

I am going on vacation to Mexico for 10 days in June and am splitting the trip between Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos (already been to Cancun and Cozumel). Who (and on what itinerary) would you recommend to get from PVR to SJD? Thanks for your help - I know nothing about domestic Mexican flights.

I don't really care what airline it is, as long as they are safe. Is there anything like WN in Mexico?

Ohh, this is a tough one... First of all, I have to say that Mexico does not have a WN... though we wish we had one!! Second of all, PVR and SJD are two beach destinations, so there is no market for a PVR-SJD flight. I will say that your only choice is MX and a roundtrip will cost you a minimum of $400 USD or a minimum of $250 USD one way. My advice is that you try to build a Multiple City itinerary using Mexicana from the US, since you won't find any other airline to connect you between these two cities.

The only Mexican airlines that have schedule flights to SJD are AM, MX and JR, so I would suggest you look at them, although SJD is a very expensive destination in Mexico.

Finally, I will just say that traveling around Mexico by plane is very expensive and doing it buy bus is quite a nightmare, since we have mountains all over the country!!!

I would recommend MX's sked thru GDL. No non-stops! I just picked FEB 23 as a sample date...

23FEB MON PVR/CST SJD/MST-1

1MX/5D 8122 PVRGDL 1130A 1215P SF3 0
2MX 402 GDLSJD 210P 235P 320 M 0

1MX 403 SJDGDL 315P 535P 320 M 0
2MX/5D 8297 GDLPVR 825P 910P SF3 0

Thanks for your help - I figured that it wouldn't be an easy itinerary. Why is traveling around Mexico so expensive? If airfares in the US were similar to that of Mexico's, we'd have LCCs sprouting up left and right to undercut the majors!

Uhh, another difficult topic!! I will try to make a summary:

Lets say that you can thank our beloved Mexican government for protecting its Monopoly called Cintra (owner of Mexicana and AeroMexico)! And yes, Mexicana and AeroMexico are government owned, and they hold 78% of the market or, in other words, they fly 8 of every 10 passengers in Mexico. This monopoly allows expensive fares and if another airline wants to compete, they both lower fares on that particular route to burn the competitor. Additionally, AM and MX benefit from preference for gates in congested airports like Mexico City, faster approval of new destinations, life dormant international destinations, etc...

I flew AM from JFK-MEX-Leon-MEX-Cabo-MEX-JFK. The trip wasn't that expensive and the transfers were relatively smooth- although you can walk FOREVER in Mexico City when connecting international to domestic.

Most likely the shortest will be AM via GDL. PVR-SJD is a route between leisure city's which most carriers don't due. So you will have to go via a hub and the shortest routing will be thru Guadalajara.

Thanks for all the info - I really appreciate it. How far is it from PVR to GDL? It looks close on a map, but I would appreciate a first-hand account. Thanks!!!  Smile

Driving PVR to GDL is around 4 hours I think. Its a real bad road from what I hear. Flying is maybe :45-1:00 I think. Its mainly Saab 340 on the route from what I remember.
