Another Plane Skids Off The Runway At MCI!

Sat Feb 07, 2004 3:59 am

You got to be kidding me, two planes in two days. This time a DL going to ATL, 150 people on board, no injuries, thankfully. That's all I know at this time, anyone else?

O yea, this was reported on WDAF-Fox 4 here in Kansas City. Im guessing, but no 100% sure that it is DL 364, Boeing 737-800 taking off to ATL.

It is DL364.
Ship 3738. Flight was cancelled and is pending FAA review.

Passengers have been reaccomadated on alternative DL flights out of MCI
It's a big building with patients, but that's not important right now.

Ordpark:

I've worked at MCI. They're extremely good at removing ice and snow. It's just that there's a lot of ramp space to clean up.

Plus, those ice storms on the Great Plains can cover the ground in a nice sheet of ice in no-time.

By the way, this isn't the first time there have been skids at MCI in short order. Back in the winter of 2001-2002, two WN 737s skidded off the pavement.

And wind conditions can be absolutley horrid. In the spring of '02 an HP 737 landed 150 feet south of runway 27, grinding into the mud and dirt adjacent to the runway. I don't know what the official cause was, but there were recorded wind gusts that night of over 50 mph, from all direction on the compass.
Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it in summer school.

Wow, sounds like the snow was pretty nasty up there. I hear ya on the icestorms we get in the midwest. Over the last week the snow seemed like it would just keep on piling up. Glad to hear everyone's okay.

Kansas City is on the plains, so there will be alot of wind. The storm that is coming through right now just came through Denver, and it was pretty messy, with lots of dry snow. Coming down out of altitude, the snow will melt into rain. When this rain hits a hard surface, the extreme cold already on the ground causes it to freeze instantly. What you get is an extra-smooth layer of very hard ice. Throw in the winds that were assosciated with this storm (gusts up to 50mph in Denver), And I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a 738 literally blow right off the tarmac.

Tom-

Next time you fly out look for me at the DL counter/gates- would love to meet some local a.net folks...

All pax were reaccom on later flights. No one injured thank God. Ship 3738 is sitting in the AA hanger last I heard. might have had damage on the cowling.

I second the motion on the weird weather up here, my first weekend up here we got hit by 4 tornados in the local area

Andrew, if I ever do fly DL I certainly will look for you. And I hope I will get to soon, I never have flown DL before but would like to. Im going to BOS in June so theres a chance I could be flying DL, but I really haven't even started looking for flights yet. And yes we do get some wicked weather here.
