Air Tran And The A320

Sat Feb 07, 2004 4:20 am

Are Air Tran's 320s temporary until the 73Gs are delivered? I know they are chartered by Ryan International and I also thought besides the RJ's Air Tran was going to be exlusively a Boeing fleet.

The RJ's are flown by Air Wisconsin.

I know about the RJ's. And I know boeing doesn't make an RJ so having an exclusive Boeing fleet unless you are WN is quite hard.

Thanks AA. So it was temporary then. Is the 73G delivery off schedule and FL had to scramble to find a/c or was it to get those cities online?

The 73G delivery is on schedule for the first delivery in June. The Ryan 320's
are a bridgegap solution until the 73G's arrive on the property.

The Ryan lease was just a way to have planes to fly to the west coast and tap into longer markets. The A320 lease will be over in the fall. KBUF737, technically FL is an all Boeing fleet, and will be. The CRJ's are Air Wisky, and the A320 is leased. So except from the passenger point of view, AirTran Holdings is all Boeing.

KBUF,

Having an all Boeing fleet exclusively will be what CO has here in about a year, now if you count the MD-80 as a "Boeing" since the merger years ago.
Remember, COEX is a separate company.

340,
The DC-9-80 series of aircraft (DC-9-81/-82/-83) as well as the MD-87, MD-88, and MD-90 were wholly designed and produced by the McDonnell Douglas corporation, thus they are MDC aircraft.

And who owns MDC now? Boeing. So any Douglas or MDD built a/c is technically now a Boeing a/c, even though those a/c are no longer built. Many a/c recognition guides list those a/c as Boeing McDonnell Douglas or as Boeing Douglas.

Srbmod:

While you are correct in that, how many Convairs are listed as General Dynamics? Or Martins as Lockheeds?

I think that they'll change their minds in the books. However, the fact is, Boeing owns MDD, and so MDD aircraft are technically Boeings.

AirTran has an all Boeing fleet, in the manner described by others. The Ryan International planes were just a wet-lease, in the same manner than NJ wet-leased 727s from TransMeridian. The difference is that the A320s are painted in Ryan colors, while the 727s were always in TransMeridian colors. Other, similar leases go on all the time.

Cheers!
