Favorite TWA Livery

What in your opinion was TWA's best livery of all time? I personally like all of them, but would like to know your opinions. This includes all TWA liveries from beginning to end.

Yep, I am.  Wink/being sarcastic Personally I like the classic globe(s) one...with that single red lightning bolt type down the center of the fuselage, with the twin interconnecting globes on the tailfin. It's the best one because it's screams "TWA". Regards.

Yes, indeed. While I really thought their last scheme was just great, the classic has to win, hands down.

I totally agree with TWFirst. Their final livery was the best of any major airline.

I liked the last one as well as the second to the last one, from the 80's. I remember when I took them before they merged at LAX, that some of the baggage carts and things had the old logos from then, with a large red field and TWA in white. I think its kind of cooll to see traces of their old image that they didn't chang over...

I love them all, but especially the last one.

They will always hold a special place in my heart, the very first airline I flew, a TWE J41 from GRR-STL, and an MD-80 from STL-SEA. First time I ever flew too.  Big thumbs up

Twin globes on a four-holer was class. That scheme on the "hot rod" was great.
The hot rod to the younger ones out there was the 880. Fastest thing around back then, until its slightly bigger brother, the 990 showed up. He was a little quicker yet. TW, of course did not fly the 990.
If two people agree on EVERYTHING, then one isn't necessary.

I know this is a little off-topic, but how come TW painted the black line on the wings of their aircraft on the final c/s?

I liked them all, but the globes were my favorite. Anybody remember the Connies? Wasn't that livery similar to the late '70's and 80's into the early 90's- kind of a throw-back at any rate, I miss TWA! Not Forgotten! Big grin

Several questions about the Red Stripes:

1. Why did TWA only outline the 'Trans World' letters of the Red Stripes scheme when the scheme was applied in the 1970's before painting them in solid red in the 1980's?

2. Why did TWA aircraft have gray engine nacelles in the 1980's but white ones in the late 80's/early 90's?

3. Why did TWA get rid of the black paint under the cockpits of their aircraft at the dawn of the 1990's?

Thank you very much for participation in this discussion so far. Very much enjoy the opinions of others Big grin

Thrust:
A very good question. I remember the black below the cockpit on the L1011 especially and don't know why they did away with it. I did like how on the 80's-90's early 90's how it said "Trans World". I'm always going to be partial to TWA because my Mother was a stewardess for TW and that's how she met my Dad. TWA rocks! Big grin

The best TWA scheme was from the "Up Up and Away TWA" years... the first appearance of the double globe.

My favourite is the last one by far. I always thought it looked classy. It seemed to epitomize the new TWA, one that catered to the business traveler, I thought it looked very professional. In my opinion it was one of the best liveries in recent years out there (along with LanChile and Saudi Arabian). Although I thought the red stripe with the globes from the 60s was classic. I never cared for the 1975 livery too much though, reminds me too much of TWA's sadder days (Icahn years, Flight 800, bankruptcies, etc.).

Yes: The last livery was grand, that it was. It is definently the most colorful livery I have seen lately. The double globes logo was fantastic, would've looked a little better had TWA polished the bottom portion of the aircraft so it would have been as shiny as the Delta fuselage in "The Wavy Gravy" scheme.

The last livery was the best for the jets. As far as the props are concerned, the classic 50's, white crown with two red stripes on the Connie's and the Martin's was the best. While the Connie's finally got the twin globes, (it looked better on the jets that the Connie's), I believe that only the L-749's got that livery. No Super G's or Starliners ever were repainted with the twin globes.

The last one was the classy exception to the current, and drab white seen on many airlines.

It should be noted that there were some variations in colorschemes. They tried silver wings on the early MD80s. And there were some others.

Somebody asked about the engine nacelles, the former Ozark DC-9s had polished nacelles while the TWA ones had white.

Syncmaster~

The black stripes on the last c/s was for ice checks for M&E. The wings tend to freeze up on the bottom of the wings, expecially on the M80 and D9's since there are no engines on the wings.

I also liked the last one the best, but I think the tail could have had a little better design. What would have been sharp would have been to see the last livery on a 744. Now that would have been sweet.

Hmm, that makes me think of a TWA dream fleet.
