That's Just Wrong 747 At MHV Stunt

Sat Feb 07, 2004 10:25 am

I was watching a preview for a show called That's Just Wrong and they had a ex-Continental 747 stored at Mojave or Victorville used as a jet blast test with a small box type trailer mobile home. I don't know why they did this but it's stupid not wrong. just to let you know it's on at 9pm/ET 8pm/CT on Fox tonight.

And, they do not know the difference between Arizona and California. I swear I heard them say Mohave Arizona.

It was interesting to see the effect of jet blast on the following:

A boat

A small camper trailer

A large number of boxes

4 Portable toilets with one containing a Michael Jackson impersonator who did a quick moonwalk beforehand

A large amount of white powder described as "unknown Colombian cargo"

Just when you think you've seen it all.

Who needs to do such a stunt? I recall about 4 years ago, that a mid-sized jet transporting the NY Knicks basketball team upon arrival at Westchester Co., NY airport when turning around, blasted it's exaust toward a closely parked car, a Honda Civic, belonging to then coach VanGundy causing it to tumble and be severely damanged and declared an insurance total loss.

They used to do jet blast tests with old trucks under tow, to show us ramp guys in training videos and illustrate why you don't walk or drive behind an aircraft when the engines are running....

That's not to say I haven't seen some people picked up and thrown a la Pushing Tin. I have, and it's pretty funny to watch.......

Sometime in the mid 90's an Airtours (Now MYT) 767 blew over a porta-cabin (like a prefab office thing seen on building sites) at Teeside, UK. I can't remember what it was doing there but it blew it over anyway - I wish I had seen that.

I caught the tail end of it when they were blowing over the port a pots. If you watched carefully you heard, and saw, a JT9 compressor stall.

That stunt did provide quite a vivid visual display of the awesome power of the aircraft's engines. What I found interesting was that the 747 had only two engines, the inner-most engine on either wing (I believe engines numbered 2 and 3...I'm sure there will be a correction if I am in error). The other two engines had been removed.

I could picture something like this on the David Letterman Show - e.g., trying the experiment on such items as a plate of sausages, a watermelon, or a TV set tuned to Giraldo. But then, again, we're dealing with Fox, and Letterman's antics are way to classy for an operation like that....

I recall doing a push-out on a '37 (maybe a A320, can't really recall) a long long while ago, and there was this port-o-potty out off the ramp area, in the inner airfield because of some construction going on. It was a awful slow weekend, and no construction guys were around, and there was a running challenge with the pilots to see if the ramp guys could get this thing blown over.

While pushing back, I lined up the aircraft in the general direction and gave the intercom call of "Clear to start, your discretion." .... he turned #2 first, then crossbled over to start #1 - and the increased power blew that sucker right over. I remember one of the ramp guys doing a arms-up "touchdown" pose....... heh  Smile

It's the simple things that make work fun........ Big grin

I really liked it. Too bad it wasn't on at one time but I'll tape it if they show it again. The registration was N17205 on the 747. It was great and funny to see that and that guy talking about the finds you can experience when that happens.

I always find it interesting when someone questions why something was done on TV. Well....because it's TV and you don't watch it if you don't wan to.

I think it's time now for that person to once again post the video of people getting blown into the water by the thrust coming from a departing Air France 747 at SXM. That would be......well.......a blast to do!

I wish they would have had all 4 engines going on that 747 on the show. That would have been cool to see.

CODC10,
It was a Honda Civic. That's what made it such a great news story

Goose, That's a good one

I read somewhere that an aircraft had just landed at SXM and turned the wrong way during taxi, the airport manager got a phone call from the bar by the airport complaining that the A/C had blew his customers off their bar stools. I dunno someone who knows that one better than me should tell it, but there is a punch line in the proper version.

Jcded:

As people have mentioned, the best place to get blown by jet blast is at SXM, which is Princess Juliana airport at St. Maartin in the carribean.

Or, you can always get a job at an airport  Big thumbs up

Hell, when it's cold outside I actually enjoy getting a little too close to the back of an aircraft. The exceptions to this would be 737-200s and F-15s. I have had the 'joy' of both nocking me over.

I love the smell of jet exhaust in the morning!!!
