Trump Airlines, Who's Been On Them?

Sun Feb 08, 2004 2:00 am

I remember a few years ago seeing TRUMP Air in the Northeast corner doing "shuttle" services. I believe that USAirways took over the routes. I have a few questions?

1. Anyone ride on them and care to share their experience.

2. What routes were they on?

3. Why did they not succeed?

4. How long was he in business?

5. Anyone think he'll try it again?

6. Was it only served with "multli-coloured" B727-200's?

Thanks for your info!!!

Trump bought the Northeast Shuttle from Eastern, it's DCA-LGA-BOS with 727-200s.

He sold it because at the time the Donald was nearly bankrupt, with a brand new casino opening at the time in Atlantic City (Taj Mahal) and other creditors knocking on his door he sold the Shuttle.

Doesnt he still have one? It was shown on the Apprentice the other week, and apparently he was in Carson City the other day to appear before the Gaming Board in Nevada..... wonder if anyone at any other regional airports up here in Northern Nevada saw it at all? I do work with the NDOT funded airports, but would places like Minden/Tahoe or Carson City have a strip long enough for a 727? Just curious  Smile

I flew several times on the trump shuttle. It was the same planes USAir tok over (727-200's). Nothing out of the ordinary except that everything had his name on it!

Also- trump's personal plane is a 727-100 I believe. It is almost allways parked in LGA. Has nothing to do with his old shuttle operation I don't think.

1. No I never rode on them.

2. They flew from LGA to DCA and BOS every hour on the hour. They may have flown nonstop from BOS-DCA as well, although I cannot confirm this. I know that after TRUMP bought the Eastern Air Shuttle, Eastern continued to fly nonstop from DCA to BOS on their own. I find it hard to believe the TRUMP agreement would allow this if TRUMP had taken over BOS-DCA as well. Does anyone know for sure? Also, Trump operated weekend charters to the Bahamas and Atlantic City.

3. They did not succeed for many reasons, but the biggest reason is Donald Trump's financial situation at the time.

4. I cannot provide you with exact dates, but I THINK Eastern sold the "Air Shuttle" in late 1989. I know that at the time of Eastern's strike in March of 1989, the Air Shuttle was about the only thing Eastern operated for several months. Around late 1992, Trump sold his Shuttle operation to an ivestment fund and the name became "Shuttle, Inc." USAir operated the Shuttle as part of a marketing agreement with Shuttle, Inc. It was a contractual operation similar to the non-wholly owned US Airways Express operators. Initially, USAir Shuttle employees were not USAir employees. Rather, they were employed by Shuttle, Inc. USAir purchased Shuttle, Inc. in the late 1990's. For years, the Shuttle employees were fenced into the Shuttle operation and if a mainline employee wanted to fly on the Shuttle, he/she had to bid for it using their seniority. The same was true for Shuttle employees wanting to fly the mainline. In 2001, the two operations were merged and mainline employees may work on the Shuttle one day, and mainline the next. Interestingly, USAir merged the two seniority lists using date of hire at Eastern / Trump. Accordingly, former Eastern employees, who were lucky enough to get hired with Trump, suddenly found themselves at the top of the US Airways' seniority list. In fact, USAir's number one flight attendant recently retired after 50 years of flying. She was hired at Eastern in 1954, went on with Trump in 1989 and ended her career at US Airways in 2004. While many former Eastern / Trump employees have continued to fly the Shuttle, several now fly overseas out of PHL.

5. I couldn't tell you if he will try it again. I honestly don't know.

6. No it was not just served with 727-200's. There were also 727-100's in Trump colors.

I once flew on the Trump Shuttle too, LGA-BOS. I'm positive that the plane was a 727-100.

Interestingly, USAir merged the two seniority lists using date of hire at Eastern / Trump. Accordingly, former Eastern employees, who were lucky enough to get hired with Trump, suddenly found themselves at the top of the US Airways' seniority list.

Actually, I believe the pilots and the flight attendants were given seniority using their date of hire at Eastern, but the mechanics were given seniority using their date of hire at Trump. This was largely because the US mechanics are IAM, but the Trump mechanics were AMFA, and the IAM mechanics didn't want to be junior to AMFA mechanics. However, an arbitrator ruled within the last couple of months that that was illegal, and I believe the ex-Trump mechanics were awarded damages and their proper seniority.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.
