Etihad Airways To Launch Geneva And Munich

Sun Feb 08, 2004 7:20 am

The usually reliable DPTS Association reports that Etihad Airways will launch 3 weekly flights from Abu Dhabi to Geneva/Munich from May 15th. "Circle" routing:

Tuesday/Sunday: Abu Dhabi - Munich - Geneva - Abu Dhabi.
Thursday: Abu Dhabi - Geneva - Munich - Abu Dhabi

Expected to be year-around, A330-200 operated of course.

Good move...now what they need to do is try and get LH to codeshare with them in the future on this route as well as on some LH flights beyond MUC to popular European cities.

Hi, I am looking desperate for more information on this airline.

-Who was the founder, who is behind this company?
-Is it true, that the airline just received an A340?
I couldn't find any information on heir web-site

BTW: Why does the home-pages of ETIHAD looks identically to EMIRATES??

Debonair.

Not really a whole lot out there but to answer your questions:

- The chairman is Dr. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan. Company is wholly financed/backed by Abu Dhabi's government.
- No. Though they are apparently getting 2 Boeing 777s due to lack of available A330-200s.

Interesting destinations. Both not being served by GF (i believe).

I am sure more to come. The Abu Dhabi government will want out of GF sooner or later.

Just got a rather interesting email from someone who saw this topic and decided not to reply directly. Apparently Etihad's chairman (Dr. ...) has a "rather special" relationship with Geneva which is why it just happens to be one of the company's first European routes.

Bit of a missed opportunity for GF / QR / EK though.

GF has a bigger HUB in BAHRAIN than ABU DHABI.

I dont think so that Etihad will go for B 777-200s!!!

There are plenty of A 332s avbl for lease in Europe and from the SE Asian carriers.

No, there aren't many more A330s available. All ex-Swissair and ex-Sabena planes could be placed, the two former Skyservice A333s will go to Malaysia. Currently not a single A330 is available in SE Asia.
And Volare's returned A330 are currently being placed, some will go to Qatar for example.
Etihad has contracted to lease a former SIA-A343 and it seems it was the last aircraft of that kind available.

I haven't heard of Etihad getting B777s, but where should they come from? There are four United B777-200ERs stored, plus one non-ER. Aeroflot might return their two leased ones, but nobody knows when.

Used modern widebody aircraft are rare in these days, so Etihad might go for new planes.

With KOREAN AIR suffering a $ 250 million loss for the last year...Im sure that they would be interesting in leasing out some A 332s to Etihad for a short period??? SWISS too is having major financial problems so it could lease out one or two A 332s till the start of the peak summer season???

I doubt that Swiss would lease out more aircraft until end of March when the summer timetable starts. They seem to finally keep their 9 A332 + 9 A343 strategy. And Etihad might not be interested in short term leases due to cabin configuration.
Korean is currently getting rid of some older B747-400s (leases to Air India). It's always possible that they lease out their three A332s but up to that date I haven't heard anything on that and so it's pure speculation. I think they are fine with reducing B747s and using smaller aircraft.

How come there are no photo's to be found of Etihad Airways? I know their livery is very beautiful, I've seen a photo in Flight International once but haven't found any on airliners.net, jetphotos.net or planepictures.net.

Anyone knows why there isn't any photo of Etihad Airways on the net?

Because they only fly to airports where I dont think so u can take pics of planes such as DAM-BEY and AUH or at least its v hard to take pics of planes on the tarmac.

Hey,

Nice to see a new longhaul carrier in Geneva. There is certainly a lot of demand from the UAE to Geneva, I'm sure they'll be successful if they market it well.

On the side note what airport does Etihad plan to fly to in London?

LH will be receiving their newly ordered A 333s this year and will be returning their leased A 332s so maybe ETIHAD could snap up those A 332s currently in use by LH.

Etihad should also look into the possibility of launching the A 332F and start freighter flights to UK-FRA-CDG-INDIA and HKG from its AUH hub.

Instead of concentrating of being a premium passenger airline owned by the AUH govt which too owns GF, dont u think that ET should have instead being an all cargo airline so that the AUH govt could then own GF and also an all cargo airline to support it on prime cargo routes where GF has a small presence or doesnt fly to at all!!! World aircargo demand has picked dramatically in the last 2 years and it was the main reason for CXs and other major Asian carrier's survival during the SARS crisis.
