Mon Feb 09, 2004 10:41 pm

Is it just Swiss? Do any US airlines use it?

No it is definitely not only Swiss when I was there I saw AB, ST, Korean and El Al. I have to say that this is the worst concourse I have every seen. Every five feet there is a Swiss watch store and there is only one restaurant with extremely overpriced food. And there is no way to get to any other part of the terminal to eat because you have to take a 3 minute train ride. I am glad that Zurich is loosing traffic to Munich because it is a way superior airport.

WOW! A 3 minutes train ride prevents you from going to another concourse? Gosh!!! What about those huge terminals where you have to WALK 3 minutes or more?

US carriers usually stand at Concourse A nowadays. As per Unique's website, the following carriers use(d) Concourse E today 02/09/04:
LX, SQ, TG, AB, ST 4U, EZY, KL, OAW, TK, PS, TP, SU, CY, YM, EK, 'EDW', JU, UL, F B, OS, MA, OK

Pretty much anything that flies into ZRH  Big grin

Two edit's to my previous post:
- Unique ==> ZRH Airport  Big grin

==> Airberlin:
Seems like you haven't been to many Airports in your life - There's FAR worse airports around the globe where you - as Gerardo pointed out - have to WALK for ages instead of having a train ready for you. I.e. HKG, just to mention one

AirBerlin: You don't have to wait at Concourse E, if you don't want to. But you won't find a lot of concourses at airports with a such terrific view onto the aircrafts. As an aviation enthusiast you should like this. From September 2004 on, you will have the newly opened Airside Center where there will be plenty of shops and restaurants. It will be only a 2 (!) minute ride away from concourse E, with almost no walking.

I like the new E terminal, the building is very austere but has a grandiose touch to it, love the big glass cathedral aspect. I definitely prefer zurich to munich, I flew through MUC and it was not at all easy to navigate through. One thing I don't like is that the Swiss allegra lounge is not offered to flights coming into terminal E.

Jcded: The A-gates are flexible. You can park either more smaller aircrafts (320, 737) or less widebodies. As I know, you could park 747 there, at least a lot of Swiss MD-11 were parked there and they are not much smaller than a 747. But you are right, at the moment all 747 are docked at the E-gates (e g Singapore). If ever a A 380 will visit Zurich it will go to a E-gates (there are two which are ready for this bird).

I flew into and out of ZRH in January on LX and can tell you that most of the US airlines, in fact all of them (DL, AA, and CO) use Terminal A. My flight (LX 17 from JFK to ZRH) docked at Concourse E and I departed for Rome on LX 1727 as well from E. On my return to NY, I flew into E, on LX from CO / LIRF), Italy">FCO, but out to JFK from A, on LX. While I was there, many other air lines used E, including Japan Air Lines, Sri Lankan, Thai, South African (arrivals only, the departing A330 TAM aircraft they use was Parked at B) and other carriers were there as well.

Terminal E is architecturally beautiful, but essentially a boring place to spend any time. There is little in the way of good shopping, food is nearly non-existant, and the shuttle train to Terminals A and B is fast but annoying to get to (up and down on those escalators). A is my preference, because it is connected to much more of what makes Zurich unique.

All the U.S. airlines use Term A (or 1) for security reasons. AA's 2 flights are always at A71 and A72 while CO and DL switch on and off between A73 and A75. Originally, both DL and CO (being Terminal B airlines) were supposed to move to Concourse E but they couldn't work out an efficient or cost-friendly way to support the security requirements that were needed by the U.S. carriers. So now, A71, A72, A73 and A75 are quarantied areas between 8am and around 11am when the AA, CO, and DL flights are in town (i.e. only pax. on those flights can go near those gates). AA had moved to Term A earlier already as part of the general move by all oneworld carriers. DL and CO pax. have to check in at Term. B and then make the walk over to Term. A for boarding.

All other previous Term. B airlines use the E concourse (except for a few like AF and LH who park their planes on the tarmac near Term B).
