Could This Have Saved PA?

Mon Feb 09, 2004 11:59 pm

I have always wondered about ways to have saved PA, and I would like to propose a "what if" situation to some of the other history buffs out there.

As in the example of RC doing a three way merger between North Central, Southern and Hughes Airwest, I have thought that a three way merger would have saved PA.

If PA had merged with NA and then picked up Braniff, which in '81 they could have done at bargain basement prices, they could have achieved the critical mass the needed in the domestic market. A strong hub at DFW, a fleet of 727's, 747's, and a lock on South America as well.

I don't think mergers and acquistions or lack of them led to PA demise. For the most part it was mis-management, high salaries, real estate. This was compounded by the first Gulf War when 747's were flying virtually empty across the Atlantic and a serries of security incidents that resulted in fines and a loss of public confidence.
