This Really Happened On My Flight POP To JFK On AA

Tue Feb 10, 2004 12:55 am

This is an accurate account of a recent flight a friend of mine had taken on American Airlines. This is his letter to AA

Before taking off on flight 1798 from POP to JFK on Jan.25, 2004 , There was a disturbing anouncement made by a female flight attendant. In substance, The anoucement over the PA system was for all passengers sitting in the coach class cabin not to use the lavatory in the 1st class section because of security reasons. The flight attendant then went on to say that if any passengers from coach class go to use the lavatory in the 1st class cabin that there is a video camera inside the bathroom and that the camera will be turned on and you will be displayed on all the monitors for passengers to see. I understand that this was meant to be a joke but I did not find it very amusing, rather, I was quite offended by it.

Thank You,

Perhaps the joke was a bit too much, but hardly a reason to take offense, AFAIK.

What on earth could your friend have found offensive? The fact that someone dared to deny him the "right" of Coach customers to use the First Class lav?  Insane

I hope your friend develops a sense of humor, and I also hope that AA circular-files this letter.

Based on your profile, I'm thinking maybe you were offended because you're a police officer and think you're entitled to use the first class lav (and shoud get complimentary upgrades), and if it were you instead of your friend on that flight, you would have been pissed??

Sorry to get serious on this pretty funny thread, now i'm not trying to slag you off or anything but I notice from your profile you are a serving police officer, now as the son of a pretty high-ranking police officer in the UK, and someone who has has their application to join the police accepted (when Nottinghamshire Police pull their fingers out and give me a date, people from round here will know what I mean) I know full well how much it takes for a copper to be offended. If this got to you then god help you at work. that wasn't personal, just an observation.

People want service to be more like Southwest, and the second you give it to them, they wine and cry. Let me guess... this pax is next to file a lawsuit, only to be held with the high esteem of the "Eenie, minie, moe" variety.

Come on people, have a sense of humor, why do we all have to be so highstrung when we get on a plane...RELAX!!! there is not going to be a camera in the lav....invasion of privacy.......they can't deny you the use of a lav just cause your in coach and the lav is in first.....they just dont want 20 people around it....look at the big picture.....and the cop shouldn't be offended, considering that when they put on the badge in the morning they believe they can harass anyone they want for any purpose....maybe ill use your cop car for a lav next time, or would I have to upgrade!!!!

Since I wasn't there I can't tell exactly what happened nor can evaluate it accurately, but I have to admit the idea of it makes me grin. I like when flight crews are into humour a bit, makes the flight more enjoyable. But as I said, I don't know all the circumstances, maybe it wasn't that funny at all.

As a passenger in economy I would never think of using the lavatories in the first class.
And I would find the comment on th PA rather amusing if I was on board.

Grow up people! Every time I turn around there is someone getting offended over something. Its just plane stupid! Have a sense of humor and learn to laugh a little now and then. It will shave years of stress off your life.
I was on an Alaska Airlines flight where the flight attendant gave the most humorous and best safety announcement I had ever heard. She mentioned that, when the oxygen masks drop from the ceiling, please stop screaming and place them over your nose and mouth...." She also mentioned that "smoking was prohibited on the airplane and in the airport facilities and that once you have exited these premises and are calmly sucking on your cancer stick, you might want to consider purchasing life insurance...." These were just a few things she said on the flight and every time she spoke, she was humorous and had everyone's attention. It was great, but I am sure someone got offended in some way, shape or form.

The F/A was only doing what she was told; this is just another dumb directive from DHS. As for the joke, yea, maybe that was a little uncalled for, as we just don't joke about security.

I do not think that the camera or using first class lav's was the issue folks.

The F/A said it was for security reasons...

And I agree. I do not make security jokes to airlines or the TSA and you don't make security jokes to me and we'll have a nice flight...okay?  Acting devilish

I can't believe I'm being THIS serious!

I think its hilarious....

As a flight attendant myself, I can only imagine what kind of passenger this guy is. Probably the one puts his feet on the wall and is very loud, full off himself no doubt. While were at it....why dont you guys turn me in to Northwest for doing the garage sale announcement on NW flights..

....please check around you seating area, in the overhead bins, and closets for any articles you've brought on board today, as all items left on board become property of this flight crew, and will be featured in the flight attendant garage sale, which start thursday and runs through the end of this weekend.....

its real funny when youre standing there next to the captain saying good bye, and people keep saying good luck on the garage sale as they get off the plane...the captain eventually gets weirded out by it and goes back in the cockpit......
Go yakkin !!!!!!

I once landed at ORD and the F/A, anticipating a long taxi, calmly explained the the psgrs that we had actually landed in Aurora and would be taxiing to Chicago and everyone should please stay in thier seats.

As I mentioned before, this is my friends account of what happened, I as well find the whole thing ammusing.

I'm gold with DL and get the complimentary upgrades all the time and I could give a rats azz if coach uses the biz/1st class lav. I'm sure the folks in coach would rather stay in their class cabin anyway.

Also, I've been on that flight before, and for some reason, no one obeys the bathroom laws of the different cabins, and further, what's more annoying, there are lots of poeple that stand up to retrieve their luggage well before the plane gets to the gate. Head shaking material, huh?

Steve XOXOXOXOXO

Just goes to show why Americans get so offended by the British sense of humour, they just don't get humour at all. Why the hell do Aircraft PA's have to be so bloody staid and boring all the time. Here we tell passengers regularly that they can smoke freely - provided that they come to the back galley so we can open the door and they can smoke outside.

He wouldn't do so well on WN or Song. That's all they do is joke around. Personally, I think the FA was putting the First Class Passengers on the spot.

A confession: I wanted to post this message just so I could sign my name with kisses!

I'm a Platinum elite with Continental, and I could care less who uses the First Class Toilet. This sense of entitlement on the part of many first class passengers is pretty unreasonable. When I am sitting in coach and I need to go, if both toilets for Coach class have a line, I go to the F class one. Period. I'm not going to bust my bladder or flatulate all around just because of a silly curtain.

noonerlicious, first off, thats one of the best usernames I've seen on here.

secondly, great pic of my friend sitting on the can. The FA was telling the truth after all.

Also, I gotta agree with AR385. If I am sitting in coach and all the bathrooms are being used, Im gonna use the first class bathroom. Is there some sort of fine that goes along with doing that? Do they kick you off the plane? Is the toilet paper different? The soap in the soap dispenser different?

Anyway, my friend has yet to hear back from AA but will post it here when they do. I am sure it will be nothing short of interesting.

Jumbojet:

To answer your questions, to the best of my knowledge, nobody will fine you. But you may get an uptight flight attendant (which are the exception) that might declare you "unruly" if you insist on using the F toilet after he/she has tried to escort you away.

On domestic flights, at least on Continental, nothing is different, except that maybe they'll put a flower. On the 777, however, the business/first toilet is huge, and it has an almost a body length mirror, plus a sort of amenities like different colognes and aftershave lotions.
