Most Strange Sight At An Airport?

Tue Feb 10, 2004 9:17 am

What would be the most strange sight you have seen at an airport???

I went to my local airport SYD to see this beauty sitting on it's behind - and found it quite bizarre:

There hasn't been a time when I haven't seen rabbits... no, that's not it... hares, jumping and feeding around rwy 23/5 in HMO.

They usually stand near the rwy lights, and either they're deaf, don't give a dam about planes roaring ahead, or they just enjoy the show  Laugh out loud

Here at PIA (Peoria, IL) we were used to seeing 2 large dogs roam around the terminal. They would walk through the automatic doors and just wander around. They were amused by the many passengers and liked the attention they received. One dog was a Brittany Spaniel and the other was a Golden retriever. They were nice dogs, but they smelled awful and would track mud around the terminl when it rained.

After a while the LEO's would receive complaints and they put them in the squad car to take them home to their owners. Finally, the new director got tired of seeing the dogs roam around the terminal, so he had Animal Control called out to deal with them.

Cheers!

Cesssna 152 sandwiched between an AA DC-10 and an AA 757 at DFW back in the early 90s. Quite a funny looking sight.

British Airways 777 at CLL (Easterwood Airport, College Station, TX) in April 2002. Definitly looked very out of place there.

For me, the strangest thing I saw at an airport was actually quite dangerous. On final approach to MEL in a QF 744 from LAX we could see a heard of kangaroos bouncing around which excited us Americans until we saw that one had gotten into the airport fence and was hopping around. I don't think that happens all that often, or does it? I heard hitting a kangaroo is like hitting a deer, can't be good for the aircraft or the 'roo.

Outside DEL (Delhi India) on the front lawn under the sign saying the full name of the airport, we saw from the crew bus a few cows laying and chewing their cud.

Quite odd to see that for the first time, but made the Indian experience even more flavorful. Something about cows hanging out just a hundred yards from beautiful, technologically advanced, multi-million dollar aircraft that just personifies this amazing country being filled with extremes!

People pulling the airplanes instead of tugs. I saw that a few times in Saudia Arabia 13 years ago.

I didn't see it, but at my little airport, KLOT, the infamous 737-200 landing and presentation. The aircraft flew around once then landed in only 1/3 the length of the runway and proceeded to taxi without using the tiller most of the time, something I though was impossible at that airport. The funniest thing I saw there, a hearse picking up a "dead" body from somewhere in the grass on Halloween during one of my classes (our campus is right on the airport) or a G2 trying to figure out how to get on the taxiway after chewing up the whole length of the runway on landing. What was funny was I saw him while I was walking into my classroom, I dropped my books off, used the bathroom, got a drink of water, walked up to the dispatch desk, and he was STILL making his way off the runway. Pretty funny sight  Laugh out loud.
I don't know, so this is my signature.

i like the pic of the widebodies following the cessina!probably the funniest thing i've seen at CVG was a AF a340 taxi into the wing of a DL 777 going to FRA.the ground crews thought they could push the 777 back as AF was coming in!i shoulda taken a pic of the resulting damage.the A340'Swing fence hit the 777's rt wing just outboard of the flaps.DL was not amused!it was full of fuel and pax were on board to!think they had a story to tell! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

The strangest sight I had at an airport was the lack of airplanes. I traveled from STN-TSF on a Ryanair 738 back in July 2003. We were the only aircraft at the airport (if you can call it an airport). I looked at the monitor in the arrivals hall and they weren't expecting many flights all day.

In 1986 at Terminal One @ Sky Harbor we had a "wack-o" leap over the counter and on to the bag belt holding a razor blade to her wrist. She was screaming that she would kill herself if she didn't get on her flight. Well she didn't. She got a ride to the funny farm instead...

A couple of things: a fox running down the runway at Altoona, and back in the 1970s, when United Airlines had a pilot's strike, I guess they brought in some replacement pilots. I was at the Memphis airport and saw the arrival of a United 727 one night. The crew had absolutely no idea where the United gates were located (at that time in the "B" concourse now occupied by Northwest) and basically taxied around the entire airport looking for the gate. They eventually sent out an escort pickup truck to guide him to the correct location.

The most funniest and dangerous thing I have ever seen at an airport was in Skiathos, Greece. Now for anyone who has been to Skiathos will know....its a great place fo spotting. The perimeter fence is about 5 metres from the start of the runway. The biggest plane Skiathos gets is probably the A321.

Now the incident that I saw involved a BAE146 and a man on a scooter  Smile .
We were told to move for the takeoff of a BAe146 (can't remeber the airline). We were all safely aside when this guy comes screamin past us on a scooter and into the wake of this full throttled BAE146. He took off (no pun intended  Wink/being sarcastic ) and and fell bout 10 metres back onto some grass. He was rushed to hospital and recovered (at least I think so). Weirdest sight I've seen at JNB is Pullmantur 747-200 filling in for Olympic.

Chennai, India. Landed there (runway 23? been a while) and cleared, then noticed a gentleman sitting in a lawn chair between the parallel taxiway and the runway with a rifle on his lap waving at us. Later found out his job is to shoot birds when they fly onto or near the runway.

Some third world airports have strange rules. For example, I had an overnight in Bamako, Mali about a year ago. Somebody drove us to what sort of passed for a hotel, then in the morning returned and brought us back to the airport. He drove down a series of dirt roads, past an unmanned guardpost of sorts, several other dirt roads or paths, then stopped just short of the tarmac, 100 yards from our aircraft. We asked why we had to walk the final distance, he replied that for security purposes it is forbidden to drive on the tarmac..... this, after speeding unnoticed, unchecked across paths and fields just to get us that far...

Then last December in Hong Kong, I was the Captain for my crew, the security guy literally taking everything out of my rollaboard searching for my nail file, unable to find it, then lecturing me about the security of my aircraft. Normal stuff for flight crews, unfortunately.
