New 9,000 Ft. Runway At CLE

Tue Feb 10, 2004 10:38 am

What is the deal on this runway? Is it built or half built? The mayor said that this runway would attract different airlines offering different international destinations. Possibly more CO international destinations, British Ariways, Air France and maybe Virgin Atlantic. Well, its been two years and I have haven't seen any of those international airline in CLE. Also if it is half built, will someone finish it?

The new runway, 6/L24/R, is halfway completed. The original plan was to take it out to 9,000 feet, but because of problems such as the filling in of Abrams Creek and NASA, the whole 9,000 ft. streatch could not be completed in December of 2002. Thus CLE opened the first 6,800 feet in December of 2002. Work continues on the last 2,200 feet, and should be completed in the next couple of years. The current runway 6/R24/L is 9,000 feet, but will be expanded to over 11,250 feet. The new runway adds capacity, but would not increase the likelihood of Virgin or BA coming to CLE. When 6/R24/L is expanded to 11,250, which should be completed by 2007 international expansion would be more likely to take place.

Wow 11,250ft. isn't that the distance needed for something like an A-340-600, 747-400, or 777-300? That would really help international activity out of CLE.  Smile

Since the CO flight only operates seasonally right now, I really do not expect BA or VS to come to town anytime soon. Until the economy recovers what we have is what we have. Maybe if US goes out, and PIT down sizes back to nothing, CLE could see more traffic tho even that is a slim chance for us to see more flights right now.

According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the full 9,000 feet of 6/L24/R will be completed this summer.

What would that mean? Possibly more flights to further destinations?

TriJetFan1,

Most likely, all it will mean is that the runway is longer. CO will only add flights if it will make money on the additional service. With the current CO fleet size staying the same, or even shrinking with the retirement of the MD-80's, I would not anticipate a huge increase in mainline flying. Other airlines wont add service either unless they can make money. Unless the economy turns around, I don't expect to see any widebodies or much additional service unless its flown by an ERJ. In my book, any new flight is a good flight.
