Just a warning, while the Ramada is the closest hotel to the Central Terminal Area of JFK it's still kind of in no mans land.

Also the rooms are terrible, pathetically small tvs and interiors which make Days Inn look like the Ritz Carlton.

Also right behind the hotel is the Jamaica Queens waste water treatment plant, the smell is terrible.

But it's the most conveinent to JFK..

That's a big problem with JFK, the lack of "decent" airport hotels and the fact that the hotels the airport does have are kind of far from the terminals compared to other major airports.

I think they have a Court yard Marriott across the Belt Parkway, which is the best they have.

If your ok with the accomadations the Ramada is your hotel, but I think the Court Yard might have a better choice with the view since it's more elevated and closer to the threshold of one of the runways.

Some rooms at the Courtyard by Marriott indeed offer decent airport views.

Go with the Courtyard, the Ramada is not a tall building and does not offer a view of anything.

nobody mentions the Five Towns? Sure it's a hole, inhabited by freight dogs, but the 31R arrivals pass just overhead. Be careful walking around after dark though....

Are there any hotels near JFK with a good overview of the airport to read off the registrations?

It's impossible to read them off from the Ramada (they fly over you), and since arrivals on 13L are quite rare apparently...

While in JFK, my dad and I stayed in the Ramada due to the proximity to the airport. The room we stayed in was alright, a bit better than what was expected (and I sort of expected for the worst), but the food is just expensive and the quality is just not worth the price. The only good thing I can think of the Ramada is the arrivals to 13L.

I "lived" for two months at the JFK Holiday Inn during 2002, room 1230. GREAT observation position near the top of the building for planes enroute to runway 13L...the feeling is though you're located in the control tower with views of the runways and terminal area, especially with binoculars.

JFK Holiday Inn is a short walk away from the cargo zone and to a nice grassy field beneath 13L final approach apron. Sidewalks line the area as well. There is also a spiffy pedestrian overpass near runway 13R, excellent for spotting.

Note: there are no restaurants, other than hotel fare, in the general vicinity of these airport hotels mentioned. HInn, Radisson, and Courtyard are literally located on the fringe of a wooded residential neighborhood. I dined frequently at HInn Claudine's, which was always pleasant and appetizing. Great buffets B, L, and D.

Subway...the station is a short bus ride from the hotel. I don't know the specific routes, however, since I bicycled everywhere that summer.

Have a great time, and thanks for the memories 737Captain!
