Leeds Bradford (LBA) Airport

Wed Feb 11, 2004 10:21 pm

I'm thinking about taking the Jet2 service out of AMS into LBA in the coming months. How's the airport, movements? carriers? types?

All info is welcome  Smile

I flew with Jet2 on LBA-AMS last October. My report is here if you want to have a read:

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/36534/

The movements to be seen will depend on when you plan on travelling (summer or winter), and whether you plan to take the morning or evening flight, but which ever flight you choose there is a very good chance of seeing some of the following:

Maybe 3 or 4 other Jet2 733's
Bmi F100/ERJ145/ERJ135
Eastern Airways J41/J32
KLM Citihopper F100 (if you choose the morning flight to AMS)

Plus if it is a summer trip you have a good chance of seeing the MYT A320 and BY B757 (it will be a 767 in May/June) which will be based at LBA this summer. There could also be other charters around depending on the day/time of travel.
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

And if you're really lucky you might get to see the brand new BMI A319.

Does Leeds Bradford have any designated viewing areas? Jet2 are a great airline!  Big thumbs up

There are some really good viewing spots at LBA.

There is one right next to the threshold of runway 14, and one that overlooks the whole airport from a small hill opposite the terminal building (behind the general aviation side of the airfield), there is also a public footpath that runs around the perimiter of the south eastern corner of the airfield where you can get right next to the R32 threshold but this is a little hard to find if you ain't familier with the area. There used to be some good spots inside the building too but these have now gone as they have built a new walkway accross the windows now.

Some examples of photos shot from the R14 Viewpoint :-

Enjoy. It's not a bad little airport and you just never know what will pop in there.

The spot overlooking the terminal (where the Concorde shots were taken from) has been somewhat compromised by the new hangars built on the south side of the runway.

The R14 view point is well worth the trouble to find, I stop there as often as I can. I've seen many varied types at LBA including an Antonov, various RAF fighters and a C-17 transport in the last few months.

One thing to consider is that public transport to the airport is awful consisting of one bus service (hourly or half-hourly at best).

A site that may be of some use is the LBA spotter site;

Hope you enjoy your visit.
