How Many B727-100 Are Still In Service?

Thu Feb 12, 2004 8:02 am

Saw N1910 727 of Planet Airways landing today at MCO, and started to wonder...who still flies these beauties? I think this is the last commericial passenger 727-100 in the US...

I know that LAB/Bolivia still flies one and I think that TAME/Ecuador is still
flying one as well. Other than that, those planes are getting very rare
to spot now days.

I know First Air does, and I think Fedex too but I'm not sure.

First Air in Canada operates several, some as all pax, some as combis. Great, classic birds. Totally unique.

Doesn't Con-Air still operated one 721 for transporting folks between cellblocks? I remember a single 721 for the FAA, then this same plane went to the US Marshall office. If anyone knows, please reply. Regards.

The Justice Deparrtment has moved on, and now use 2 MD-80s. UPS is perhaps the largest user, with their re-engined 721s. FedEx is scrapping most of their 721 fleet. Around 12 have been donated to tech. schools.

AM744 - The Mexican Air Force one you mentioned reminded me of their 737-100 too. Is their 731 now the only one still flying in the world, or has it too been retired? Can anyone shed any light on this??

I'm sure at least one (if not two) of the Australian Air Express 727s is a -100.

ConAir (US Marshall's Service) operates a lot of short-term leases of many types. MD80 seems to be their preference right now.

They are still quite a few Executive B-727-100 around the world, also quite a few Pax& Cargo -100 in Africa.

Cheers

LAB actually has 3 727-100's, two are in service right now, CP861 and CP1223. They look good, they are in good shape, and if I'm not wrong CP861 is the only 727-100 in operation with first-hand owner.

I work for First Air...

We still operate C-GVFA and have just purchased C-FPXD. It is in C check in YQB getting ready to begin operation early next month. It is painted yet so there aren't any photos yet of it in the First Air livery.

We recently retired C-GFRB, and C-FRST a couple years ago. All these are B721 combis...

We also operate C-GXFA, the only B727-200 combi in the world. Now that is a unique airplane!

Also have 2 B727-200 freighters and 3 B737-200, 2 of which are gravel kitted.

All Canada Express operates a 727-100 series.

Also, Donald Trump's private jet is another 727-100 series still active.

I believe that UPS' fleet of 727-100RE freighters will continue to serve with UPS for some time to come, mostly because the planes use very quiet Rolls-Royce Tay engines and have two-crew operation. They will be slowly phased out as the airframe life of these planes come to an end.

Actually UPS is retiring their 727-100s at a fairly rapid pace, the current fleet plans shows us to be down to approx. 12 727s by years end. No UPS 727 is two crew, all are still three crew.
