Remember The America West 747?

Sat Jan 22, 2000 1:37 am

Can anybody tell me the story of this plane? Why, when, why not, anymore?

HP had 4 ex-KLM B747-206B's (N531AW, N532AW, N533AW, N534AW) which they operataed in '91 and '92 on PHX-LAS-HNL flights. I know they were planning on adding a destination in Japan but I am not sure if they actually ever started those flights. According to my 1991-1992 edition of JP's they had 2 B747-4G7's on order for delivery in 5/96 and 4/97!

Why not anymore? They could not make money with them, so they parked them.

I Remember Them Well!

Sat Jan 22, 2000 2:46 am

I used to live in Phoenix and remember it well (747s parked at their hangar). Flygga is absolutely corect in his/her statement. To the best of my knowledge, HP never did do the Japan route. They decided to do the HNL trip during a terrible time for the airlines and lost a fortune. Why the heck would you take on a low yield trip like this while everything else is bleeding as well is beyond me. As you remember, HP just about disappeared from the face of the earth about that time as well. They needed to restructure their route systems and ditch aircraft so that they could restructure themselves. Thus, goodbye 747s.....

HP did fly to Japan for a short period of time. I have one of their old timetables showing a flight between Honolulu and Nagoya. I think Nagoya was the only city in Japan that they flew to.

Everyone has been right so far. We did do the Japan route for a short time but we lost a lot of money. After we declared bankruptcy, the HNL and Nagoya routes were cancelled. The 747's were parked in LAS and were not used again until they were used to transport troops during the Gulf War. Last I heard there was only one left in LAS, one had been scrapped, and as for the others, who knows. Hope that helps some.

N534AW is standing at Marana. Note that this aircraft served with TWA as N306TW for a short period after leaving HP.

At least three have been scrapped:
N533AW San Antonio (5/94)
N532AW Mojave (8/94)
N531AW Kingman (2/96)

Flew America West 747 in 1989. Was non-rev... Worked for Pan Am at the time...

Flight went JFK-PHX-HNL-NGO

Segment from HNL-NGO only had 12 pax. (8 non revenue) 11 flight attendents and 3 cockpit crew... Talk about a money loser. But WOW! What service as a non revenue it was great!
