Advice Re DXB Or AUH

Fri Feb 13, 2004 1:43 am

Ok, when I signed on for A.net I sort of promised myself I wouldn't post questions asking for advice about specific flights, but alot of others do it, so here goes! In late March or early April, I want to go to DXB and AUH for a few days, coming from NYC. As I used to live out there, I know there are alot of options. I used to mostly fly with BA and I have enough miles with them for a free Club ticket but I know that product and service quite well. I'd really like to try something different, even if I have to pay up! I will stopover someplace in Europe for a day or two so I can go with almost any major European airline, or fly a US or European airline to Europe and then EK or GF to DXB or AUH. So what do you all think?

Emirates flys one of their brand new A340-500's out of LGW to DXB every day at 13:40 EK16.

I would give that a go.

Thanks, might be worth checking out as that's the aircraft that will eventually come to JFK if we can believe them. Problem is LGW, pretty much have to fly Continental to connect there from here...

Hey, Michael!

First of all...Great to hear that you're going back to the UAE for a visit. You used to live in Dubai, no? Well, let me tell you something--be prepared for a big SHOCK--Dubai's constantly changing, so you might not recognize it! I'm also glad you're going to visit Abu Dhabi, too...It's a great city (lived there my entire life til I left for college last August!) that suffers from underexposure and the behemoth that is Dubai!

Anyway...I've flown KL/NW so far for my trips back and forth between Detroit (I go to U of Michigan) and Abu Dhabi (ie. 1 roundtrip and a half so far). I LOVE NW's A330 service between DTW and AMS, with AVOD, relatively comfy seats, and nice, courteous, professional crew (for the most part). The food isn't too bad, either. Also, the McNamara Terminal is probably my favorite airport terminal in the world so far--rivaling DXB in terms of modernity, convenience, and sheer elegance (except in the duty free department).
Now, I unfortunately do NOT recommend KLM. AMS is a nice airport, I suppose (though a bit on the expensive side), but coming off of a brand new A330, KL's ancient 767's pale in comparison in almost ever aspect. KL's flight attendants are better than NW's, though, and are kind of their saving grace for me.
Sooo....What I would suggest is flying NW's A330 to Frankfurt. There, you can catch one of the (I think) 3 (?) EK flights to Dubai or a GF flight to BAH/AUH. On the other hand, if you feel like giving KLM a try, you can fly through AMS to, say, DXB, and return from AUH, as KLM serves both cities daily.

I'm going to AUH for spring break next Thursday..It'll be my first time on BA, so I can't wait!

Hope that helped, Michael! And good luck with your plans!

Thanks Talal, DTW is going backward to go forward for me but nice to hear some positive comments on the NW A330s, was wondering how they were...You have a good memory, I have said in other strings that I used to live in Abu Dhabi, actually from 1996-1998, so I am sure there are alot of changes there as well as in DXB, going to try to get to both in 4-5 days....I decided better to make a short visit now than wait til I could take longer, as it may not be til after the summer that I can get more time off. What I am really looking forward to is seeing my Emirati friends, I haven't been there since '99 and they haven't been here last 3 years for obvious reasons....Anyway, BA's service to AUH and DXB is not at all bad, just think I might try something different this time. They don't have the friendliest crews but they are very competent, had a near 100% dispatch record at AUH when I was there. Anyway, have a blast on your spring break trip, see if you can talk your way into World Traveller Plus or Club if you aren't there already, and feel free to drop me a note or post any tips on what's new in AUH when you get back...

Ive got excellent advice for u which will help u in many ways.

Since u dont want to fly BA then fly EK via LGW from EWR to DXB J class on their new A 345. Make sure that u choose LGW-DXB-LGW on the A 345 and not any other EK aircraft.

U will fly EWR-LGW on CO who codeshare with EK on this route.

Now for ur benefit...EKs SKYWARDS ff-program has both BA and CO in its list of partners u can fly so u can obtain maximum mileage from ur trip as its J class so 125-150% of the miles u fly will be credited to ur account. I dont know though if BAs FFP has EK in it as a partner?

Another option for you which I recommend to DXB from NYC (EWR or JFK) is SWISS. Their new J class on the A 343 and A 332 is SUPERB 5 stars and the best thing is that for u, you can get miles on your BA card for flying SWISS anywhere in the world. So in all essence SWISS is the more perfect better choice for u than the CO-EK combination.

SWISS at least too guarantees an excellent 5 star J class product on all its A 332 and A 343 flights (though try and get their A 343s). THeir A 343s fly to EWR-JFK and DXB too from ZRH.

So overall, go for SWISS as ZRH airport too is amazing and beautiful.

ZRH airport too is amazing and beautiful

If you consider construction material everywhere to be aesthically pleasing, you may have a point. Personally, I prefer something not under renovation.

Thanks Behramjee, I agree with you re SWISS, I flew them last year between JFK-GVA, economy one way and business the other, and I can't say enough about the quality of the service and most importantly, the genuine friendliness of the cabin crew. And I have to like an airline that even sells its own CD of Euro techno/ambient/trance music (Swiss One)! Very cool experience, and I am sure a very safe choice being from neutral Switzerland, so maybe will give that a shot to DXB if not EK....

Hey Rivervisualnyc,

I am going to second that option on NW/KL. Normally I fly KL from KWI, but this August I flew KL from Dubai. Currently Dubai is a 744M so you avoid the 763 which I consider to be KL's only weak point. KL's product in Y is lacking compared to the others, but in my mind the cabin crew more than make up for any faults. Some of the best around.

You were also wondering what NW's A330's were like. Here is a trip report on my NW/KL flights this December with an A330 leg. Hope it is of some use to you.

Considering i flew 4 times a year from the UK to DXB , :
I would personaly recommend the CO-EK from LGW on the A345 ,
or simply the MH B777 from EWR to DXB - another excellent airline if u wish ..

regards ,

ps: hope u have an excellent trip whatever u choose , and have a brilliant time in DXB - enjoy the weather  Wink/being sarcastic

I would take a flight to CDG using the free ticket. And then fly MEA with a stopover in BEY.

Worthwhile the stay

Rivervisual,
I'll throw my 2cents in since I've flown there quite a few times. If you can afford J, try EK or GF out of Europe. Their service is really outstanding. I've flown GF 6 times, 4 in F and 2 in J. GF offers individual video players in J class. If you have to fly Y, avoid EK's 777. They're configured 10 across!
It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

RiverVisualNYC,

Any of the options that your fellow Airliners.net members have showed you so far would be great.

GF and EK are both excellent airlines and so is BA.

MEA is offering a special package for people like you traveling between the Americas/Europe and the Gulf.

Right now they are offering a one-night stop over in Beirut for $105 for those traveling between Europe and the Gulf.

They provide you with the following in this $105 package:

  • Transportation from the hotel and back.
  • Accomodation in a four-star hotel.
  • An evening at the Casino du Liban with dinner or alternatively dinner at restaurant or play/theater. Transporation is also provided.

This is really a good deal and I highly recommend it. It's actually become quite popular.

Not to mention you'll get to enjoy MEA's fantastic new interior which rivals Emirates.

MEA has 2 daily flights (1 A321, 1 A330) to Paris (CDG) and they code-share on Air France's daily 777 flight.

They fly to Abu Dhabi (AUH) 5x weekly A321 and they fly to Dubai (DXB) daily A321/A330.

Again, I highly recommend this deal. You'll get to see Lebanon, a beautiful country.

Tourism is quickly growing each year.

Weather in both Lebanon and the Emirates is very pleasant. Perfect timing!

Lebanon might be rainy on somedays, but nothing else. It's snowing in the mountains right now...

Thanks all, very helpful, will let you know what I end up with, may go with BA if only because they are the only ones that have an overnight flight from London arriving DXB in the morning, saving me a hotel night I don't really need anyway....Almost everyone else arrives in the evening when it's too late to do anything....I am trying to have like 4 nights, 2 in DXB 2 in AUH so this allows me to say leave NYC Monday night, arrive London Tues am, spend the day in London come back for Tues overnight flight arriving DXB Wednesday morning, stay 4 nights (ie Muslim weekend and 'Western' weekend) but have 5 days by leaving say early Monday am eg after midnight Sunday, get me back to NYC Monday afternoon...Maybe overanalyzing but a good way to maximize a short amount of time!!!
