Wasn't this a 757 or 767 route pre-9/11?

Hmm,I think this might be the only scheduled DL 738 at JFK.

Deltaffindfw:

This route was indeed a 767 route pre 9/11, and it was a 'BusinessElite US' route, along with LAX and SFO. Now it is only LAX.

It was a 767 route, but it wasn't nonstop (via PHX).

Also, anyone think it's odd they have a 5.3 hour flight time? AA, Jetblue, and CO are more like 4.75 hours on the eastbound I think... I guess DL wants to make sure its ontime numbers are good.

This is part of their overall JFK spring/summer 04 expansion announced at the end of January. There will be additional 738s at JFK starting in spring - not only with the SAN flights but also with JFK-DEN (2x daily), an additional JFK-SFO (evening departure), and an additional JFK-SEA (morning departure)

Prior to 9/11, Delta had served JFK through Phoenix for a number of years. However, sometime in 1999, Delta upgraded SAN-JFK to a nonstop flight on a BusinessElite 767. The route probably didn't perform well, as it was downgraded to a 757, then a 738, and then simply dropped completely in favor of the one-stop 767 flight through Phoenix, again. This flight was dropped itself about a year ago.

Sadly, neither Delta nor American offer Business Class service to JFK anymore. I had several great flights in J going SAN-JFK on AA. Now all AA flies are old, "LRTC" 757s. Still, it's great to see Delta reentering the market with 2 daily flights, as well as American resuming 3x daily service, starting this spring.

I think CO will upgrade one of its SAN-EWR flights to a 757 this summer--I wonder if it will be an internationally configured aircraft with BusinessFirst seats?

The first of Delta's "copy-cat" B6 routes.
Obviously they dropped the route previously because it wasn't good for them. But now since JetBlue flies it from JFK, it obviously looked a lot better for them!

At least this time they are using the correct equipment (in my opinion).
None shall pass!!!!

Regarding the 19:07 arrival time in New York, I rarely fly Delta, but isn't that arrival too late to transfer to Delta's bank of international departures from JFK? I'm usually a United flyer. From Dulles, most of United's international departures are between 17:00 and 19:00. When do the bulk of Delta's international JFK flights depart?

The 19:07 arrival will allow a few European connections - to BRU, MXP, FRA, and VCE. If you look at the new schedules, they are mostly geared to domestic flying and not really for international connections and geared towards higher aircraft utilization with short turnaround times. That's why you have a 19:55 departure to SFO and a 20:00 departure to DEN (one of them utilizing the 738 that flew in from SAN at 19:07), both of which are not really conducive to international connections (the last transatlantic arrives JFK around 16:00)

I agree with Bicoastal and Panamair that the 19:07 arrival time is not conducive at all to connections, and represents just how much Delta is betting that O&D passengers can make this flight works.

I always fly American to JFK. AA seems to have two banks of departures to their (limited) European network. Usually, AA 160 gets into JFK around 4pm, perfect for the first bank (BRU, ZRH, BDA, CDG, LHR, Iberia to MAD and Finnair to HEL) between 17:00 and 19:00. The later bank (CDG and more LHR) starts around 20:00 and lasts until 23:30.

Personally, I don't see why Delta didn't just tweak the times on a lot of their new JFK flights to make them better for connections. Sometimes the biggest mistakes are the most obvious ones.

Panamair, 16.00 interanational arrival and 20.00 connection are not too far away. Four hours for Immigration, baggage claim, customs, baggage re-check, and check in is never too long at JFK. Even within the same terminal.

A four hour connection at the terminal 2/3 complex is a LONG layover. Most customs/immigration/recheck/security processing can be done there in two hours tops.

Four Hours..... By todays standards that is what you would call... A long and unrequired connecting time... Come now.... Delta is going to market routes with a 4 hour layover, when American can market the same routes with a 1 hour layover.... Business wise it makes much more sense to choose the airline with the least amount of connection time... Afterall, time is money!

American does not recommend any international connections with a 1 hour layover at JFK.

Gigneil:

Try a couple fo the following conections:

Los Angeles to Buenos Aires
Los Angeles to London/Heathrow
Los Angeles to Paris/Charles de Gaulle
Los Angeles to Rome
Los Angeles to Sao Paulo
Los Angeles to Zurich
San Francisco to Buenos Aires
San Francisco to London/Heathrow
San Francisco to Paris/Charles de Gaulle
San Francisco to Rome
San Francisco to Sao Paulo
San Francisco to Zurich
Sa Jose to Burnos Aires
San Jose to London/Heathrow
San Jose to Paris/Charles de Gaulle
San Jose to Rome
San Jose to Sao Paulo
San Jose to Zurich

Even with 1 hour and 30 minute connections all is possible... The only time in which a long connection should be recommended is in the even of a change of termanils... As with Delta Airlines at JFK.... Air France and Alitalia depart from JFK Termanil 1...

Anything less than 2 hours layover at JFK is short, at least tight! Not so for US citizens/residents, but especially for foreigners. The immigration lines at late afternoon hours can themselves take closer to an hour. Then you have to claim your luggage, and the lines through the Customs are often a chaos (no lines, just a bid mess). You have to plan for being the last person out of the plane, and the last person to clear the Customs.

I have been meeting arriving pax numerous times at various terminals at JFK, and never has the person been able to make it to the arrivals meeting area in less than an hour from the flight's arrival. Never.

I know, it's not that bad the other way around at all (domestic to international). No luggage claim, customs or immigration.

if I'm not mistaken I thought they already had that route. And I think it was on a 767 at one point.
