Do You Think Thomsonfly.com Will Succeed?

Sat Feb 14, 2004 3:39 am

I was somewhat surprised a few months ago to see CVT confirmed as Thomsonfly's base. However, even though I live in West Yorkshire, about 3 hours drive from CVT and having a perfectly adequate JER service from LBA albeit at a much higher fare, I find myself drawn to them given the fare and timings on their proposed CVT-JER service. I would like to go to JER to see the airshow on Sept 9th this year.

What does anyone else think of the proposed Thomsonfly.com setup? Will they steal passengers from BHX or even further afield? Do you think that CVT will work for them as a base? What other bases do you think they might add in the future?
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

LCC service to that part of the Midlands is a bit lacking - EMA is a bit of a way away, and its that or drag yourself down to LTN or (God forbid) STN. BHX has only Duo and MYT (I think), and their destinations are a bit limited, and in Duo's case, only served once or twice a week in a number of instances. Let's hope FlyThompson manage to shake off the Britannia image (which despite I'm sure numerous fans in this forum, is not that good amongst the wider public - I loved the old livery, but their "scheduled" services such as they were were appalling). I know they intend to fly to NCE, and I am sure I will give them a try, as my folks live near Rugby.

I hope they do succeed, but just had this dumped in my Inbox. May not be as smooth a start for them as they first hoped......

AIRPORT GLITCH THREATENS THOMSONFLY LAUNCH

13 Feb 2004 10:19

TEMPORARY passenger terminal buildings at Coventry Airport may have to be pulled down, casting doubt on the launch of Thomsonfly.com.

A report by Warwick District Council found temporary terminal space built to handle Thomson’s low-cost airline passengers was too big and breached planning controls. It also found work done to the runway was carried out without permission.

Council chiefs are meeting this week to decide what to do, but a spokesman confirmed some of the building could be demolished.

Such a move would seriously hamper Thomsonfly’s planned launch from the airport on March 30. Thomson hopes 500,000 passengers will pass through Coventry this summer. The temporary terminal building was erected to handle passengers until a permanent structure can be built.

A council spokesman said: “Our officers have investigated the airport and found there are a number of areas where planning controls have been breached. For example, a turning circle has been added to the runway area without permission.”

A spokesman for Thomsonfly said: “We are aware of the issues and we have every confidence Coventry Airport will be able to settle them with the council. As far as we are concerned, we will be launching on March 30.”

Using CVT is a gamble given that there is no pedigree of passenger flights, charter or scheduled from the airport

Setting a launch date when so much of the infrastructure isn't present seems a huge gamble, and one, if it goes wrong, could scar them for ever.

Having said that I hope it works for them.

One of the many problems facing Thomsonfly will be marketing both a new airline and, in effect, a new airport. There also seems to be a particularly vocal NIMBY movement in the vicinity of CVT.

On a related note I cannot understand the TUI Group approach to their subsidiaries. Surely it would have made sense to have branded Thomsonfly as HLX so as to develop a pan-european LCC brand.
Sit back, relax and enjoy your flight with us today.
