US Airways Transatlantic News

Just a few notes on the upcoming summer's schedule for US Airways transatlantic flights:

- Starting Apr. 17, daily 767-200ER service between Charlotte and Frankfurt will be upgraded to an A330-300.

- US Airways will add a second daily flight between Philadelphia and Paris, effective May 1. The second flight will use a 767-200ER. However, the current A330-300 service will be downgraded to a 767-200ER (two daily 767's).

- Seasonal second daily service between Philadelphia and London-Gatwick will not return this summer. One daily A330-300 will remain.

- Daily service between Philadelphia and Madrid, Spain, will be upgraded to an A330-300, effective May 1.

- US Airways will begin new nonstop service between Philadelphia and Glasgow, Scotland, effective May 10, using a 767-200ER.

- Seasonal nonstop service between Philadelphia and both Dublin and Shannon, Ireland, will resume, using 767-200ER aircraft. Philadelphia-Dublin begins May 1, and Philadelphia-Shannon begins May 2.

- Daily service between Pittsburgh and London-Gatwick resumes May 1, using a 767-200ER.

COuldn'r USAirways use their 757's to open new low density routes from their hubs (maybe even Boston and New York) to Europe?

When will they start moving into Latin America and when will we see further expansion in the Caribbean?

US started flying to MEX from CLT once daily in October, 2003 using an A319. Even though they also have the authority to do PHL-MEX and they made it public that they intendend to start service in 2004, this route has not materialized yet.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

This sounds good. However, it would required ETOPS-certification of the 757's first, and installation of Envoy Class seats.

Even though they also have the authority to do PHL-MX), Mexico">MEX and they made it public that they intendend to start service in 2004, this route has not materialized yet.

As mentioned on another thread, there seems to be uncertainty over the PHL-MEX route, especially with MX's leaving Star Alliance.

US Airways' primary New York City airport is LGA, and in fact US doesn't fly into JFK at all (I think the only airport with a runway longer than 500 feet in New York State that US Airways doesn't fly into)  Big grin LGA, of course, has the 1500-mile and Denver perimeter rule except on Saturdays, and even then, somehow I doubt that customs would be pre-clearing a flight LGW-LGA...additionally, as for the 757's on low-density routes, the 757 isn't the plane that US Airways has that is best-suited for the type of route, with the A-319 having a range that is only slightly shorter, and only fitting 120 people in their current domestic layout...

US's 757s are among the oldest and least capable on the planet.

They're best relegated to the services they're now on - cheap and full.

Heh, point being, the DC-9s wouldn't be tapped to operate PHL-the British Isles.

I was responding to someone's suggestion of transatlantic 757 service on US. I think the US 75 is a fine craft, but not capable of such a sector.

They would probably use the A321 for that insted of the 757. Recently they began pulling seats from the 1st class section of the 757 so they could add more coach seats. I believe they are going to use these 757's on routes to FLA and LAS.

The -225's are among the oldest on the planet. The -2B7's (which make up two-thirds of the 757 fleet) were delivered between 1993 and 1995. Not as new as CO's, but significantly newer than many of those at UA/AA/DL/NW. That being said, I don't think that US's answer lies in transatlantic B757 flights.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

The A321 is definitely not capable of transatlantic routes from any of US' hubs, to anywhere farther than KEF or REK, even from BOS or JFK.

A 319 conceivably could from BOS... but it'd have to be a fully configured one.

Standard 319s do not. The 3700 nm 319 is an optional range, one which Air France has selected for their Dedicate services.

Further, 3700 nm is hardly enough range to make PHL-TXL at 3500 nm. The 3700 nm range of the 319 is insufficient for alternates and diversions eastbound, and would never make it with the winds westbound.

Sorry got my Airbuses mixed up...i ment to say the A330 not the A321, yeah the 321 does have its limits. And some of US's 757's are old EA pieces of junk and who knows how old they may be. They probably have gotten as many facelifts as Dick Clark has gotten over the years.
