MD-11's In Storage, Why?!

Sun Feb 15, 2004 3:41 am

I do not understand why a lot of airlines have dumped their MD-11's to be put in storage in the desert. I mean, most of them are only 12-13 years old, and there is AA and NWA aircraft that are over 15 years old! Is it because the growth of such airliners like the A-340, A-330, 777-200ER and 300? Please share your opinions and information.

The MD-11 has much higher operating and maintenance costs than the newer Airbus/Boeing models. For example, the 777 was a brand new aircraft when it was first built in the early 90s, and newer technology meant it could be much more efficient. The MD-11 is basically a heavily upgraded DC-10, which will obviously have much higher costs attached.

I think that is the very reason why Airlines such like American, and Delta have opted to let go of their tri-jet heavies, because of Boeing 777, offers much more cost effective operations when compared with MD-11.

to date only Finnair has aquired new M11s to its fleet other airlines hv either sold their equipment 2 Fedex or put it in storage cos other planes are now readily available in the lease mkt since 9/11

And there are some A319's in USAirways colors at Goodyear, too.
The desert isn't limited to older planes as you have pointed out.

I remember seeing an article somewhere that had pictures of one of the major desert storage airfields, I think it was VCV... it was shortly after 9/11, and there were freshly painted 737-700s of WN almost straight out of the factory, that were surplus to requirements.

Why would an airline buy a brand new expensive A-319 when they could just buy it from US Airways that is in storage on the desert? Or in that case any aircraft that is in the desert.

I doubt a new A319 in the desert is destined to be there for a long time. One possible reason is that the airline storing it may not want to sell it... it may be there because at the moment it's surplus to requirements, but they might need to bring it back into service in the short-medium term.

Here's a better question: Why the hell is UA storing their Boeing 777s? The MD-11 makes sense to store: It is too expensive and costly to maintain for airlines. I saw a UA 772ER in storage, N205UA! Out of all airplanes to store, why the 777, one of the most fuel-efficient airplanes the world has ever known!

They were there in late 03 as big as life parked by the fence. Dont say "I doubt it" cause you werent there and my AW mechanic friend and I was. The closest was about 150 feet away. Why they were there isnt known. So I wont guess.
I ll let you do that. Binoculars are handy because the numbers were
N726US
N728US
and
N729US. That was OCT of 03..Now today, they may be in service but five months ago they were parked at Goodyear. Oh Yeah, and so was four 737-700's in Midway markings.

dont mess with the old guys................ LOL.......

Thrust
According to UA don't fly MD-11s. Isn't their long-haul equipment 747, 767 and 777?

EDIT: Sorry that didn't come out quite right. It should have said "According to www.jetphotos.net/census..."

One belief is that DL is just holding its MD11's there until the market comes back...It is belief that MD11's will return to DL if the market turns around...Notice that DL did not do any kind of ceremony for the retiring of the MD11...it is because they are not sold...they have a very high chance of coming back...It makes more $$ sense for DL to keep a plane like that on hand instead of buying new a/c. DL already owns the MD11 and doesnt have to pay anymore money for it...That should make sense

Interesting Deltadude8.. From what I understood, the MD11 was gone for good from Delta service. I'm sure a lot of people think the same thing. Hearing that Delta MAY reintroduce the jet if business picks back up is good news.. I just hope it happens  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

FLYtoEGCC.. UA never did operate the MD11 (I wish they did). I'm sure that Thrust knows that too.  Big grin

MD11LuxuryLinr...
I just re-read Thrust's post, and realised I mis-interpreted what was being said. Thanks for pointing that out to me, I'll read more carefully in future!

Cheers

First, I work MD-11s almost every night. Once you get to know them they are not bad. It is really a matter to know the systems well.
Secondly, most of the parked MD-11s are destinedto become freighters. AFIK there are only two companies worldwide which do freighter conversions, Finnair and SAECO in Singapore. They are both booked out. The planes are just waiting their turn until they get converted. Many cargo airlines are looking for well kept second hand MD-11s.

Thanks for that post, Jan. I would have been very surprised if those MD-11s had seen their final flying days! They are obviously very efficient freighters - Lufthansa like them, don't they! And I doubt they would have ordered brand new aircraft off a production line that they knew was coming to an end if they weren't totally happy with them. Interesting to know that there are only two places in the world performing conversions, though. How long does a passenger/freight conversion take, start to finish?

Well, FedEx is going to be keeping their Maddogs for a long time. I wouldn't be suprised to see us pick up a few more in the future. I would rather see more MD11's come on line than more MD10's.

As of 2 weeks ago, those UA 777s were still there at GYR.

One belief is that DL is just holding its MD11's there until the market comes back...It is belief that MD11's will return to DL if the market turns around...Notice that DL did not do any kind of ceremony for the retiring of the MD11...it is because they are not sold...they have a very high chance of coming back

Interesting notion. There is a row of them at GYR too. This includes the only MD-11 painted in the new livery. There is also one in the widget livery.

So, what do the MD-11 flightcrews do in the meantime? Do they fly other fleets and then come back to the MD-11 if and when it comes back?
