How Much Has PHL Changed?

Mon Feb 16, 2004 7:44 am

Hi!

I haven't been in PHL since 1997 and I wanted to know if anything has changed then. Back then (this is before my first trip to MDW) I thought it was by far the dirtiest and ugliest airport in the US.
So, since I am going to fly into PHL in April I wanted to ask you what I can expect.

Thanks a lot!

PHL is much improved since 1997, the airport has been cleaned up and renovated thoroughly with the main addition being the food court and shopping area between terminals B/C, along with new terminals A-West and F, so it isnt the slum it used to be...enjoy your visit! However, baggage handling hasnt improved much, but thats behind the scenes really...

The previous post is right on about PHL. It's much better. It's still not as user-friendly as many airports. Are you spotting while you're here?

As long as you are not arriving on Terminal E (Delta, Northwest, ATA, Midwest Express) then you'll be seeing the massive improvements to the airport. Terminal E, however, has been largely ignored. The B/C connecter and both those terminals are gorgeous, so is A and the new A-West terminal. Now if only PHL could work out security so that transferring from E to any of the other terminals didn't require re-screening...

AirT85: PHL is in the process of moving security back at E so you dont have to exit security to leave the terminal. They are also planning to combine the D and E check-in areas. I would look for E to get some more attention now that it will most likely be the home to a good number of southwest flights.

I think it was 2 to 2.5 million...

PHL has undergone much change in the past year even. Esp for international travel A-West is a 100 times better. MOre immigration booths, more that the 3 old carousels. I didnt go there for while after A-West was open and I was shocked out of my mind when i entered the immigration hall. The glass effects and new eqquipment of A_West is superb too. The gates there are far apart though since they are all widebody gates.

Ok, so I like A-West..

PHL is getting there guys, just too much walking for connecting flights.

Thanks a lot.

I will basicially just be connecting there though (and coming in with Delta). But I am glad to hear that the airport has improved so much overall.

Unfortunately, Delta's Terminal (E) is cut off from the rest of the airport. You won't be able to access the shops, new terminals, etc. Who are you connecting to?

I'll be off to Europe again with AF. So I guess I'll have a chance to see quite a bit of the airport by the sounds of it.

What will your transatlantic flight be on? I'm assuming you are coming from germany. If you are flying Lufthansa you will still dock at terminal A, however you go through to the new customs hall. Not sure if Lufthansa will begin to use the A-West when USAirways joins star alliance

Last time I checked...AF was still departing from Terminal E and arriving at Terminal A...so unless you have time on your hands, you'll be only on Terminal E.

Okay, well I guess then I can come home and tell the people that PHL hasn't changed one bit.

Well actually I have almost 3 hours. So I will have a look around regardless.

AF does depart from E. They tow it from A every day. They are probably sprucing up E, in part, because WN will be moving in to 4 gates there in May. A couple of years ago they finished an extension to D. I think it was supposed to be for Air Tran, but they are all UA gates now. Air Tran is still in F.

PHL27RPhotog: Airtran moved to D about a year ago. Airtran uses D14, D15, and D16....3 of 4 new hammerhead gates at Terminal D

Yes, unfortunately AF still departs from E so you will be stuck at terminal E.

Both Air France and Lufthansa use the new A-west terminal. AF parks at A-16 and then is towed to Terminal E and Lufthansa arrives and departs from A-15

I should pay attention more when I'm there. I haven't been in D for 2 years and it was all UA then. Thanks for the update.

AF's E to A (or A to E) changes are for the convenience of Skyteam. If I remember correctly (and I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong), TWA used to do Gatwick departures from whatever terminal it was at (D??) and arrive at A. Lufthansa used to depart D and arrive back at A. If PHL had a better inter-terminal transportation system, then international connections could be easier. I've lived in the Philly area for about 14 years now and I've never heard about plans for such a system. Is (or was) one out there?

On the terminals that are connected inside security, the best you'll get is a bunch of moving sidewalks, Cha747...we dont have trains or monorails or anything like that, nor can I imagine them even in the plans for the future as there isnt really room for it...Im interested to see how this whole airport redevelopment/expansion thing (as reported in the Inquirer a few months ago) turns out...some of those plans were really outrageous, as in tearing down most of the airport and basically starting from scratch...

What happened to the blue overseas terminal? I deplaned from a Hawaiian DC-8 in 1989 after arriving from Iceland. When I went back to PHL in 1994 it was gone!

The old international terminal is still standing, but it's just an empty sad-looking building.

The last time I was in the Overseas Terminal, was for a Gore campaign event in 2000. He flew in, spoke, flew out. The building isn't used for much these days...

The last time I was in the overseas terminal was when my aunt was coming home from Kuwait for Desert Storm...

And it looked old then!

Alot of what happens to PHL's terminals will depend on the configuation the FAA chooses for the new runways. There is alot of moving around they would have to do depending on what they choose. Some requires nooone at all. Reports in the Philadelphia Inquirer show plans for a combined lobby check in area for Terminals D and E. Similar to B/C. This would allow for more room in the crammped bag rooms of the airlines in D and E as well as one check point for security for both piers, with TEN lanes. This will integrate E into the rest of the airport And releave congestion inthe bagrooms and security lines.

One good thing about E's isolation...If there is a security breach E never had to be evacuated like the other terminals. They were completely independent. But that was the one and only plus to this arrangement.

As far as transportation goes currently US is running shuttle busses bak anf forth from C to F. There will be a new route from C to A. Making the commtue from gate to gate much easier. I feel this may only be a stop gap measure until a monorail system is put in place. There is one place you can always build...UP.

anyone know if the overseas terminal is even used anymore? There is that one gate at one end of the terminal. I know the overseas tarmac is typically used for charters and aircraft RON, but i wasn't sure if there was any reason why the gate was still in place.

I think when the new A-west plans were announced 4 or 5 years ago there were also talks about a monorail. But with the new design of the airport taking precedence i doubt we'll see a monorail for at least another decade.
