now...there is nothing unusual about the routing, but i've never seen a flight in the 6000s....is this a charter or extra segment and if it is a charter, who'd want to charter WN?

I don't know why the 6000 number, but I do know they do charter. I once worked the SMU football charter when they came to town on a WN plane.

WN does lots of charters such as military, college team, and vacation ones, but those numbers are usually in the 4900 numbers from what I remember

The reason for the 6231 flight number was that this was originally supposed to be -231- and that the flight was "stubbed" with a different aircraft and crew.

Say, 231 goes from XYZ-HOU-MSY-MCO-FLL, and the flight is really late on the XYZ-HOU leg. If there was supposed to be a crewchange in HOU anyway, we'll find a different aircraft (if we can) and use it with the fresh crew to originate 231 from HOU -ontime-. The problem is we can't potentially have -two- flight 231s (XYZ-HOU and HOU-MSY) in the air at the same time, so we add 6000 to the regular flight number, and voila', the HOU-MSY and subsequent legs are all 6231. Sometimes we do this even when a scheduled crewchange isn't planned--we just find another crew somewhere, if we can.

Because SWA has regular flight numbers in the 1000 and 2000 series, you will also sometimes see flight numbers in the 7000 series and 8000 series.
