Common Airliners You've Never Flown

Tue Feb 17, 2004 12:20 pm

I've been thinking about how I have yet to fly on an MD-80, and with Delta and American Airlines flying a lot of the type, I find it interesting that I've yet to be on those. So I ask, what airliners that are (or were) in common use, have you, for whatever reason, never had a chance to fly.

Note that common should be common for your country/route/age, e.g. Caravelles were common in Europe but not in the States after UAL got rid of them. Ilyushin's and Tupelovs are of course common, but unfortunately, not where I fly. Thus I couldn't write down a TU-134 or an IL-62, or a Trident, (I *have* flown on a Caravelle.)

So here's my list

MD-80
A-310
F-100 (gonna try to fly on American's if they still use them to YYZ when I go in March)
I may be ugly. I may be an American. But don't call me an ugly American.

I haven't been on any regional jets, nor have I been on any DC-9s, DC-10s, MD-11s, A300s, A310s, A330s or Fokker F-28/F-70/F-100s. I have been on A320s but not on any of the newer variants like the A319 and the A321. I haven't been on any 737-800s or -900s either as of yet.

Let's see, I've never flown on any Embraer product (and I'm not exactly sad about that). I've also never flown the A-340, 318, 319, or DC-8 (but that was a bit before my time). I think thats pretty much it.

For those who have not flown a 767 you are not missing much. It's an ok plane, kinda noisy. I have flown everything except the 777, which I want to badly! That plane looks too awesome!!

Favorite of course is the 747.

I agree on the 777, I would love to fly in one! I was setting myself up to fly home after living in England on United Airlines, taking a 777 through LHR-ORD and then a connection to YYZ. But a friend managed to get me onto a sold-out non-stop Air Canada flight, and I couldn't really refuse because it saved me almost a hundred quid. It was my first flight on an A340 though!

And, I would love to fly in a 747...hopefully on the upper deck.

Never been on any of the A320 family. I almost did when I went to Chicago O'Hare from Washington National Airport on United, but they changed the aircraft to a 727 (which I had already flown before) at the last minute. I was pretty angry...

Never flown the A320 or A330. Should have a chance to knock both of these off with Jetstar acquiring A320 and QF more A330's.

The big one that I missed was the Tristar and that looks less and less likely as each day passes.
I've not been on many regional prop types either, but I've been on many ERJ's which are my preferred types.

Hopefully get some more types in during the next few years. Probobly need some int'l travel to get on the "busses"-not too many here in the states.

Tue Feb 17, 2004 4:00 pm

Well, I have yet to fly
Boeing 717
Boeing 767-400
Boeing 737-200 Combi
Airbus A318
Airbus A340-500

I guess the most common out of these five types will be Boeing 717, used quite widely these days by Air Tran, Hawaiian, and Midwest. I get to book myself on an Air Tran soon... it will be an interesting experience.

I have been on plenty of 737s, 767s and 747,

but the plane I am wanting to try is the 757 and any regional jet, ERJ145, or CRJ. Ansett had the CRJ200 for a few years.

For someone who's relatively young (29), I've ticked some pretty cool boxes - Concorde, 707, Caravelle, 737-100, 747-400ER, F70.

But I've never been on an A340.

Of the ones that are still in service and are common only the TU-134 and TU-154. And if you will the 717 and MD90 (whereas I am not too sure I didn't in fact fly on one yet).

P.S. T500, you're not missing much on the MD80s, but what was the TU-154 like, must be shocking!

Depends upon what constitutes 'common', but I haven't flown on an MD-11, a Saab 340, a Beech 1900, a Fokker 70, a CRJ, etc. Most of my flights are on 737s (normally -300s).
