Advice Needed About TransAtlantic Flights

Wed Feb 18, 2004 3:49 am

Hey Guys,

I am flying as a passenger from London Heathrow to New York (any airport) towards the end of this month and I was wondering which airline offers the best economy seating and IFE?

In the running is British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines & United Airlines.

I am taking a friend, who can only afford economy  Sad

The other plan is to fly from Southampton (my local airport) to NY via Paris, but this is with Air France and I hear their Tempo class is not that good??

Thanks for your assistance guys

Kimberly.

VSGirl, CO flies their 777 AMS-EWR, and is codeshared with KLM LHR-AMS on a 737 or F100.

Hi Kimberly,

Can't you sort out a cheap flight for your friend with upgrades subject to load on VS?

If not, take any of them except UA.

AA has MRTC if you want the legroom, and it is worth it Smile

Have a great time,NYC is excellent!

Remember that punctuality is an important factor too. Judging by this years statistics, you're better off on United from LHR or Continental from LGW, wheras Virgin have particularly poor on-time record on LON-NYC flights.

Take a look at the 9th table down on this page:

I'd highly recommend AA. Their 777s are among the most comfortable planes in the sky, even in coach.

I would really suggest flying with UAL. I am a UAL fan and have a UAL 777 pilot in the family and trust me it's worth the extra buck. Even in coach the service is better than most other EU airlines. Ptv's BETTER CHANCE OF GETTING UPGRADED, economy + (ask for it its really alot better), and it will most likely be run by a 777, if a 767 than I would see if others are any better. I do not recall the last time I flew on a UA767 but I don't recall any ptv's and some would say that it makes no difference but trust me it does. Just my normal UAL support speech!(I don't really think that it would cost that much more, and if not UA than try to book on a 777 at least!!!)

Tomgib,

There are only 'no show' seats aval for crew on VS with the dates we have to fly out and I would to try out another airline to be honest.

My ORD-AMS and AMS-IAD UA763 had PTVs and the cabin was 2-3-2 I believe...possibly 2-4-2. Anyways it was much more comfortable than the 777 from IAD-ORD on the same trip.

I did a JFK-LHR round-trip on VS last month and was rather disappointed in the seating. The flight to LHR (VS 010) was on a 343, and I found the seat quite narrow, worse than even the seats on WN. The return flight (VS 003) was a 744, and the seat was somewhat wider, but as was the case with the earlier flight I was really confined whenever the person in front on me reclined his or her seat.

Personally I would pick an airline that has two-abreast seating like UA, AA (777) or Virgin if you fly a 340.

Hi Kimberly: Thanks for coming to NYC, we are in fact still here, despite 9/11 and the poor economy....Come and shop til you drop, pound is strong so spend money! As for flights, I fly between NYC and LON (usually JFK-LHR) a few times a year, and I like BA's economy (World Traveller), it's better than any US carrier's transatlantic economy I have tried. The Premium Economy WT+ is quite a good value as well, but of course it costs more. I have not flown with VS but I understand their product is good too, they obviously have alot of fans, I am just partial to BA due to lots of miles and having some friends work for them at JFK station, also they are very reliable (BA if not my friends!). Most of their LHR-JFK flights are with the 744. AF has a nice business class but since you're going economy I'd avoid it, I don't think they have much in the way of IFE in economy. As for the US carriers, the IFE, meals, etc are often more tailored towards American tastes, and I don't particularly think they do longhaul well, especially on the 767, but you might like it. Anyway, enjoy NYC, if you want more NYC info check out www.nycvisit.com

I'd recommend UA or LH if you find a cheap fare via FRA.

Actually LH is net very comfy and entertaining...they have different strengths...

AA is IMO the best pick...or UAs PE class...

United certainly has PTVs in all classes of service on its three-cabin Boeing 767-300ER and Boeing 777-200 aircraft. These are currently the only aircraft used by United between JFK and LHR.
