What Cargo Have You Flown Or Seen Tied Externally?

Wed Feb 18, 2004 6:11 am

I go canoeing in Manitoba every year, and hire a Beaver to fly me out. We tie the canoe on the outside float strut. This past year the pilot told me his boss tied a 206 jet ranger that went down on the outside of an Otter. And I remember seeing the Shuttle fly over piggybacked on a 747, what a sight!

You don't have to have actually flown the cargo to share, but if you've seen an unusual cargo load tied to a plane, let's hear it!

There is a picture knocking around the database taken from a 747 looking over the left wing, tucked beside the inner engine and the fuse is another engine that is being ferried (it sure as hell wont fit in the hold - it was a PAX jet). Also the AI 747 which got blown up near Ireland in 1988 was ferrying an extra engine externally.

I'll dig the picture out

I think I've seen one of a TWA 74 ferrying an engine back that way. It seems like I have heard that was a pretty acceptable, if not unusual, way of getting an inop engine back to a MX base. Love to see the pics.

If found this one, it is not the one I was looking for but does show an extra engine being carried externally.

Great picture, the canoe load isn't uncommon. I'd bet the eels are though.

When I worked banner field ground crew a couple summers ago, the pilots used to roll the banners up and tie them to the sides of the citabrias when carrying them back to home field (not being shown anymore).

Maybe I should clairify. It had to be on the outside of your/the airplane.

Many years ago, 1979 I think, I was on a 747 with a third engine being ferried. Yep, it sure looked strange every time I looked out of the window!!
